But the first iteration of the Lytro isn’t quite there yet: it’s hard to use, its display is terrible, and outside of a few particular situations its photos aren’t good enough to even be worth saving. It’s not even close to being able to replace an everyday camera, and at $399-$499, for most people it would have to. If you’re curious about what’s next in photography, you should definitely buy the Lytro — if nothing else, it’s one of the best conversation starters I’ve encountered in a while, and the variable focus never fails to impress. But otherwise, it’s a great companion camera if you already have a point-and-shoot or DSLR you like. Lytro’s not quite ready to be your only camera.

Figure another year or two and this will be ready for the mainstream. It would be neat to play around with, but the price is stupid, and the quality is generally mediocre. This is not the kind of thing I'd want to be an early adopter of.

It's almost as if this is really just a showcase of what it can do once they partner with bigger companies.

Why even waste money on this camera when CS6 will do this.

^ I wonder if they really are the same or at least similar enough?

Apparently Steve Jobs was in talks with them before his passing... would not be surprised if some Apple product integrates this in the near future. I'm no Apple fanboy, just remember this being said.

After looking at the sample pictures, while the technology is cool, the pictures are not particularly striking.

Got mine a couple days ago. It's an amazing little camera, but it's going to be a while before it comes close to a traditional camera. I'll be carrying my DSLR in tow for quite some time to come.

i would really hate to see this technology go under. Seems like a few mods and tweaks could make it useful for some awesome macro focus stacking capabilities
