At last, I’m getting a full frame camera and more than likely I will preorder the new 5D III or just get a 5D II. Most of my landscapes shots are between 20-35mm and f/11 or above, I’m looking at 24-70, 24-105, 17-40. Does one of these lenses stick out or something else used for around 1k.

I think the 17-40L actually does better at 24mm at f8-f11 then the 24-105.

Dare I say it - particularly in the corners. Yes, even though the 17-40 has a bad reputation in the corners and you still get people saying the 24-105 is 'as sharp as a tack', the above is true in my experience.

Plus you can go wider than 24mm.

I'm a little biased because I use 17-24 mm a lot, and have tested the overlap of these at f5.6-f16 and the 17-40 wins.

However, if you think 24mm is really going to be wide enough, then the 24-105 gives you that extra flexibility of FL + IS. But purely for IQ in the f7-f16 range; the 17-40 has the edge (to the edge).

For 20-35mm @ f/8+ I don't see any reason to do anything other than the 17-40, really; although I don't have any hands on usage of that one, myself. As the previous poster mentioned, if you can comfortably get away with 24mm as your widest angle, the 24-105 really is a very nice lens that I use a lot (albeit as a standard telephoto on my 7D/40D).

are you talking 20-35mm on your current lenses? or did you already factor in the crop factor?

Yes, with crop factor. I'll start looking for a 17-40 new or used after I see the price of the 5D3.

Thx guys.

If you're after a zoom, the 17-40 is capable of some excellent images and it's competitively priced. If you were after a couple of primes, you might be able to purchase quite a few elderly ones for a kilodollar. The OM Zuiko 24/2.8 compares really well and excellent copies can be found for $200.

You would however be loosing autofocus - depends whether that matters to you or not.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.
