Soooo, went to shoot with my few weeks old macro L, stunning photos, but the IS motor was acting up & making weird high pitched motor noises....

Contacted BH already.

Thoughts? Common?

Thank you.

Don't have one, but I've already heard (or rather, read) here that is was a proper chainsaw, sound-wise.

Eh, surprised I haven't gotten more feedback on an issue that's quite scary for me... It is an L afterall

Yep, the IS makes high-pitched noises when operating.

I particularly notice it after taking a photo, because once you release the shutter button and pull the camera away, the IS is still engaged for 1-2secs and it is trying to compensate for all the motion/'vibration' from you lifting the camera up.

The IS is certainly more high-pitched/whiny than in other lenses. On the other hand, it has a 'hybrid' IS unit that is different to the IS units in other lenses.

Edit: Of course, if the movement is just minor (i.e. when you're actually trying to line up a shot), it's not very noisy at all. More movement --> more compensation from IS unit --> more noise

Yep, mine has done that from day one - my whine-a-saurus. Great lens though...

Just picked this lens up about an hour ago, it does make a little different sound then my other IS.

The only thing that is alarming, sometimes make an odd click sound, not all the time almost like it's going to snap or something, I take it this maybe normal on this new IS system.

It seems to happen if the lens need to focus and engage the IS, if the focus has already been achieved then the noise is not heard, this is hard to describe.

Anyone else has this noise?

The lens seems to function great, it's dark now so can not wait to get this lens outside in the daylight.

I guess I am at an advantage. Even with my hearing aids in, I hear next to nothing from any of my lenses!

Yup, Have the same lens and had the same "worries" when I first got it... IDK about the clicking noise you are hearing though, Mine makes a very consistent low pitch whine

The only noise i hear from my IS is it starting up and shutting down with the press and depress of the shutter. It is actually a lot quieter then my 24-105

I just picked up this lens from B&H as well. The IS is noticeably louder than my canon 17-55mm and the 24-105mm in regards to correcting moderate-severe camera shake. When the 100L is working hard, it sounds louder (more high pitched whine). When comparing them all on a stationary object like a desk, they sound nearly identical.

Yup, the IS in this lens is different sounding than the other IS-equipped lenses I have used. The other day, while off the camera, it made a clanking sound as if some pieces were loose. So re-mounted, engaged IS, and the sound went away. Very peculiar lens, this 100L, but damn does it take some stunners!

Ya I'll play with it tomorrow to verify but I do know it's the IS, switched it off & had no issues.

I just now took mine out of the case and other than the auto-focus beep--it is totally silent.
