Just read an interview with Canon about the 5d3, and one thing was said that may clarify something with the AF...

The 1Dx and 5D3 share the exact same dedicated microprocessor for AF. Neither use a digic chip for this. The 1Dx uses the extra digic 4 for its metering system.
