My guess is....

- people has added 70-200 and find no use of it
- people has upgraded to better glass such as Sigma 85 or 85L, which is exactly what happened personally.
- crop users finding it too long

It's not very sharp IMO, strong pf wide open, my sigma owns it in every department except the slightly slower AF speed.

It is a great lens, but it's also a lens that has been in production for a long time with no real changes and it has been popular for that entire time. What I mean to say is, you see a lot of them for sale because there are simply a lot of them in the world. If it were possible to view the numbers of lenses for sale as a percentage of the lenses owned by forum members, this lens wouldn't be all that high.

I'd guess that people buy the 85 1.8, love it and then want to try the L! :)

I nearly sold mine because I wasn't using it for a while. Luckily I decided to take it out for a final spin and it's been glued to camera for the last three months. It's a fantastic lens, especially for the money, and as someone else said, it's been around for a long time and a lot of people own it, thus so many on sale.

Well mine is not for sale and is not going to be for a very long time. I won't say never, but I have a lot of other higher priority upgrades and additions before I even think about the Sigma or Canon L.

A number of people shoot indoor winter sports (basketball, volleyball, etc.) that have wrapped up their seasons.

I love this lens, I love it so much I have owned 4 of them. For me it just fell in the "eh" zone between 50mm and 135mm. I might revisit the lens when my 5d gets here. I think its a much better value than the L version. I think a lot of people get L envy and sell off all non-L lenses, which is stupid. It could also be that with a vast majority of people shooting on a 1.6x sensor after seeing the 85mm on a full frame they think they want it then they realize its more like a 135mm which is a little tight for most people.
