AF? Probably a wash, but the D800 has f/8 focusing.

On the AF front, depends on what you're doing, Canon has more crosstype sensors and they're arranged more practically than on the Nikon, But the Nikon does do f/8 focusing which is nice if you use teleconverters

So yeah, a wash depending on what you are doing with it, For fast primes i think id take the 5DIII going by whats on paper, but for anything else id take the Nikon

That's because the D800 has the 5D3 beaten on almost every level apart from frame rate.

Resolution? Check.
AF? Probably a wash, but the D800 has f/8 focusing.
Dynamic range? If what we've heard about shadow noise is true, then check.
Weather sealing? Check
ISO? The claimed 2-stop improvement is for JPEGs, i.e. noise reduction. The claimed figure for RAWs is half a stop. Definitely check - just look at the high-ISO D4 and D7000 samples.
Price? Check.
Frame rate? 5D3 wins here, but if frame rate was really your thing, you'd be getting the 1Dx or D4 anyway, depending on which brand of lenses you own.

Well about fps the d800 with grip (wait for cheap chinese knock-off one) will be able to do 6fps in crop mode, which is 75% of the mp of the 5d3... or, to my understanding, without grip, 5fps in 1.2 crop mode right? Which is what, 24 or something mp?

Agree with the sentiment

To echo what i stated earlier, I have to ask what Canon crippled in this body to not make it "steal sales" from the 1DX

Now, I will put this in bold I fully realize a 1DX can stand on its own merits, However, Canon as a company seems to like to cripple low end bodies by omitting one or two big features so you're "forced" up the line into a higher body....

So my instant thought is that the 5DIII is using essentially the same sensor as a 5DII with the new processor attached.. Which yes, it could reduce noise, even in RAW if the new amplifiers and electronics are more efficient or some such... But still... you're not going to see HUGE improvements unless Canon built an entirely new sensor

And even if Canon did that..the difference between this and a 1DX is 4 megapixels... will there be a HUGE difference in noise performance between it and the 1DX?

Either its bad for the 5DIII (As it not only got a price increase but still got the cripple hammer taken to it somewhere to "protect" sales of the 1DX) or its bad for the 1DX (Because the 5DIII is 90% of the camera the 1DX is at 50% of the price)

I hope its the second one to be honest and fair with you all...

Which is especially problematic, since there's no real replacement for the 1Ds3 (yet) after 5 years.

If you want full weather sealing and other pro features, you're basically forced into a high-ISO, low-resolution action camera with an inbuilt grip you can't remove.

Video FAIL! Canon didn't realize that's what sold the 5d2? No clean HDMI out.. No 60fps @ 1080. Huge disappointment!

At least it should do better on the audio side of things.

I am now starting to think the 7D mark 2 will be the high mega pixel (36-40 mp) full frame camera that will be announced at the latter part this year by Canon at under $3000. The 70D will go back as being the flagship Cropped-sensor camera. I just can't see Canon would let Nikon dominate a very important segment all by themselves.

there's all that b.s. talk about another FF camera with high megapixels...but it's probably not going to be a 7D...either way that's the camera i'm hoping for 7D 70D...something aps-c for me :)

I'm sorry, what about the 1Dx says low res? How many megapixels do you need?

Yeah, but that way, you're only using 44% of the sensor area - not good for noise performance or detail.

The best thing for me with the mk III is the 6 FPS. Price is way too high for me though; I'll buy it used in 3+ years when it's outdated and cheap, haha. I'll stick with the 5d classic for now.

By the looks of it, they are having NO problem selling this camera at current price. Pre-orders are being placed like crazy. Including myself :p I want this camera in time for my florida trip in May...

I am going to be unloading gear to buy it, though.

I am sure that can be a problem... but read every one of his posts....

I get tired if every page having three posts from the guy, all of they saying how the 5D3 is crap, and Nikon knows how to do things.

20 of them was ok... the 50 or so gets old. After a while, you would think he would grow tired of it.

Lol...

I admit that Canon hasnt ignited my "fire" like they used to... The Canon I see today seems more interested in gouging its customers..

But I also, as a former Nikon shooter, remember why I came to Canon in the first place.. Nikon was basically doing this back then...

Now Nikon looks aggressive and like they're a real photographer-run company, whereas Canon looks more run by Accountants caring more for the bottom line....

Nikon gets me excited for releases, the D800, 85mm f/1.8G, 50mm f/1.8G, 35mm f/1.8G, 40mm f/2.8G Macro Nikkor, D7000...etc... All things that excited me much more than anything Canon has done in a while...

to us Photographers, Nikon looks like its doing a better job, but from the bottom line standpoint, Canon's business strategy might be better... They have a lot of pros who are too locked into Canon, and too loyal to Canon to switch to Nikon, and who are more than willing to pay these higher prices... For every 10 of us that dont buy, theres 5 that will, and the sales made to those 5 make more money for Canon than if they had sold to all 15 of us at a lower price.. Thats simply how it is...

The only area I want to look more into is the AF, as 5d3`s crosstype is spreading widely than the D800, tho I didn`t shoot anything that move fast...............yet. I shoot canon but I am not a die hard canon fans, so if D800`s AF is at par with 5d3, I think it would be logical choice for FF starter to go dark. However, for someone who has lots of L lens already, they might think more.

Anyone think the new BG-e11 will be compatible with the 7D?
