The first two it's hard to tell. The third image it looks like the 5D3 has a little more detail. Definitely not noticeable without cropping and studying them.

I guess the point is, when checking out these photos shot in a controlled environment, it's difficult to tell any difference between the 5D2 and 5D3 (and even the 7D) at ISO100, so personally the whole "7D look" thing holds no merit, at least not until we actually see some real world shots. I guess I'll know once I get a 5D3 and shoot for myself. Until then, we can only speculate based on photos other people took.

Thanks for doing all of these btw.. not sure if anyone has said that yet.

I really can't wait to shoot indoor dog agility with the 5d III. While the 7d and 1d III have done the job I'm going to see an immediate improvement in my images at ISO6400 and 12,800. It is going to let me offer larger prints to my clients in the indoor events then I normally would.

You are quite welcome.
Honestly people will draw their own conclusions including me.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I don't necessarily see any marked improvement in IQ and ISO noise. Is that disappointing? Sure, a little bit. But for what I shoot, and you guys can call me whatever you like including "old school wedding photographer", what I wanted more than anything was a half way decent AF system. Boy, was I all smiles when I saw the specs for the 61pt system.

I would assume coming from a 1D3 and 7D, you'll see a marked difference in high ISO noise handling and also DOF control, particularly between the 7D and 5D3.

If you tell them that one is, in fact, sharper, your results will be invalid.

Simply ask them to pick which one looks sharper.

They're not identical images (since identical images don't exist yet), so I can't just lay them out side-by-side and ask which is which.

I'm planning on asking them to write 'sharper' or 'softer' next to a number corresponding to each photo.

The end results will look something like:

Sharper Softer
5D2 A B
5D3 C D

Based on these results, you can see if there's any correlation one way or the other between the camera model and whether it appears sharper or softer (whether it turns out to be the 5D3 or the 5D2) or whether there is, in fact, little difference between the two.

Not a valid comparison. After all, we're arguing that the 5D3's images look like the 7D's blown up to a full-frame sensor (i.e. that a 1.6x crop from the 5D3 looks like a 7D's image), not that the 5D3 doesn't have better overall IQ due to being a larger sensor. You've equalised for resolution, but not for sensor area. The 5D3 crops are taken using a greater area of sensor than the 7D.

For a valid comparison, take a 1.6x crop from the 22MP file (resizing it down to 8.6MP), blow it up to the 7D's 18MP, then put crops of the two images side by side. That way, 1000 pixels of the resized 5D3 image will have been taken using exactly the same sensor area as 1000 pixels of the 7D image.

Not a surprising answer from you.
Be my guest. You wear the chef's hat. Then again, I think you are already wearing it.

You stopped presenting evidence- or logic-based arguments a long time ago. Now you're just playing the man.

Right. I provide side-by-sides just so folks who aren't able to do the conversions themselves can see and also to debunk the whole 1.5 to 2 stop improvement thing (I figured that would be appealing to you since I was debunking the 5D3 IQ myth ) and you offer us a double blindfold survey on which camera is which.

OK then. :lol::lol::lol:

No debate from my end. I'm excited about this camera as well.

Here are 2 crops from one of the model photos.

5D3 ISO100

Resized shot so you know which shot the crops were taken from:

100% of the area that SHOULD be in focus, which is the eyes and the face. Doesn't look too sharp but I think I am seeing some back focusing on this shot though:

...b/c this part looks pretty darn sharp. Lots of details, especially the green fabric of the dress.

What do you guys think?

I think they were shot with the 24-105L, but stopped down to f7.1, which I would imagine would lessen the chance of lens calibration issues. I've downloaded the rest and am checking them out to see whether anything in the image is in critical focus.

But yeah, there's absolutely no way to tell how the AF system is.

**I checked them out and they are inconclusive. Some are worse than others. I downloaded a photo of the child and it looks sharper than the model of the woman. Don't know what to make of it.

I agree in that post of the crops the dress looks much more in focus then the face (you can see fine detail in the fabric of the dress).

Uh oh. Looks like my 7D.

Actually, my 7D is closer to the 5Dii than the 5Diii in that side by side crop.. I'm still not convinced we've seen the best of the 5Diii images, but have to admit that I'm a little surprised by the sampling we are seeing.

Here's the one with the little kid.

Resized shot:

Crop of the face:

Crop of the hand and fabric:

Crop of the face with a little amount of high pass sharpening applied:

Again, remember that sharpening was zeroed out in ACR and none was applied in PS CS5.
