Once the 5D3 is under 3K, I am going to buy it.

If the IQ was exactly the same (and I think it's going to be at least slightly better), the better UI, AF system, Movie mode, Rate feature, LCD in the view finder, level, fps, quiet shooting mode, dual card slot, HDR and Exposure features, auto iso control, improved LCD, on board lens correction, and all the other little things, warrants the upgrade.

be prepared to wait

You might not, but there are those of us who are extremely disappointed with the meagre 22.3 mp. I expected 30 at the very least, with 36mp being a definite possibility.

I'm not at all disappointed. From what I've read, the IQ is much better. Just need to see how things really look from production cameras.

36MP? I really have no use for that. I can print huge images from 22MP.

lets wait for the real gents to break this down for us (since they have the $brave$ to get the real results). Im pretty stoke with the new feature. Shooting 5Dc for more than 4 years now and this is just an awesome upgrade to have. $3500 price tag though. lol. we'll see

$brave$ - yes!

What does Ken Rockwell say about the 5DIII?

If it's in focus, it's pornography, if it's out of focus, it's art.

wait till the price drops a little!

I agree 100% since it should hopefully drop a few hundred within a month or so.

With the price increases that Canon has placed on the recent lens releases i assumed this 5D MKIII would be over 3K for the body only.

Still alot cheaper then the new 1D and a body with the features that should satisfy most folks for quite a few years out.

Regards, Ron ;)

Let's all take a step back and chill out. We're starting to attack each other and it's just silly.

I'll be the first to admit that I got a little upset at Shadowblade for constantly pointing out that the D800 is a superior camera. Well, he's just making comparisons, and educated ones at that....so Shadowblade, I apologize. It's not very fair of me to question an opinion that you have every right too.

But in other comments, folks are starting to personally attack each other and it's not right.

Let's all take a step back and enjoy learning about all of the new offerings that Canon and Nikon have given us. I'd rather be talking about photography than just about anything else, so we've got it pretty good.

Cheers,
Bryan

Any word on the dynamic range yet? I always thought dynamic range one of the 5d2's weakest areas, along with rather abrupt highlight roll-off.

Going to be very interesting to see real world raw file shots with this camera. Looks like plus' and advantages to me. AF system look great, dual cards is a must have, LCD is impressive, lay out and everything about it looks awesome

I think DP review said it best

Completely new camera with a big brother AF system borrowed from the 1Dx and 7D features incorporated in as well. After looking at all the images they posted its pretty obvious a lot of noise has been applied to the 3200 and up files. So lots of red flags have been raised. Lots of questions about IQ as well after looking at the 100% examples. They look frighteningly similar to the 7D IQ at 100% which i hated. Not going to buy into the krap of your looking at it more than 100% arguments because of pixel density arguments. The IQ better look great on a 100% crop or they can keep this thing.

So yeah, Im a little concerned about the images shown and will be in the waiting to see corner on this update. Price is too high at this point but again, waiting to see real world test and results.

I'm gonna wait and see what the real story is because you really cant tell for now. Maureen your dead bang on the $$$$$. I think it will drop in price in the next 6 months.

If the real world test on raw files show it to be a step towards 7D IQ v/s 1Dx IQ,,, i think canon will have serious problems with the update. The AF system is an about time for me but they need to keep the image quality that the 5D series has been famous for intact. If that is changed and it goes 7Dish......they wont sell. The examples they have shown really have me concerned.

I agree with Ken as well. They have watered down this update so it does not take away from 1Dx sales. Its a little bit of this and a little bit of that camera update,,,,,,nothing ground breaking that i can see. Nikon went with MP's for the wow factor. I'm not so sure what canon has decided to do to the 5D3 is going to sway experienced photographers. Right now it does nothing for me

SO ITS A WAIT and SEE for ME

Personally, from what i have seen, and not because I bought one either.

BUT, the 1DMKIV blows the 5D3 update out of the water.

For the price that canon is asking, i think you would be nuts to purchase a 5D3 when you can get a 1DMKIV. By the time you grip a 5D3 your close to a 1DMKIV territory, you don't have AF limitations, you have better iso performance with the MKIV,,its just a much smarter decision for a professional for purchase than a 5D3.

I think canon is in touchy territory with this update. Looks to me that they are saying loud and clear....If you want 1D features,,,your going to pay for it. And the mid range cameras are going to be nothing but teasers in my opinion.

My advise--- wait and get real world results before buying this camera. The images they have shown raised red flags for me. I would be looking for a clean low count 1DMKIV or even a new one before i bought this camera. From what i see, and the real world tests are not in, I will save for a 1Dx upgrade for my next full frame camera before I would consider a purchase with this update.

I'm going to go take some pictures........its been a fun couple of days and last night was a blast with all you guys.

Schools out on this update.

I don't know, I heard a lot of bad things about the IV, the 1D IV is still 1K more than the 5D w/ a grip. ($500 for a grip? Come on!)

I don't know much about that site and I probably would NEVER switch to Nikon. I already pre-ordered the 5DIII. However after reading that, in a way, he seems to be a Canon fanboy. Maybe I'm wrong, but quotes like this point to someone who is not looking at this objectively.

"But I have to say looking at the specs, the 5D MK III looks like the winner. If it matches the hype, Canon will beat Nikon – AGAIN!"

But then again, he does own both gear from both companies.

And the pattern noise / banding that comes out like a monster when trying to push the shadow areas in PP.

If they have fixed this with the 5D3, I might feel a little bit happier about this camera.

I'm glad they didn't go the route of 100MP and opt'd for reason MP w/ better ISO/Noise. But I'm having a bad feeling about IQ and thinking it is going the way of the 7D which I am rather unhappy about.

Re: the AA filter

Take a look at the ISO 100 samples (from any website - they all show similar features). Now compare them against ISO 100 shots from the 5D2 taken with the same lens.

At ISO 100, there's minimal noise reduction, so you've taken that out of the picture. The pixel density is almost identical, as is the lens, so differences due to diffraction and magnification are out of the picture as well.

Now take a look at the fine details in the shots - the sharpness of each hair on the model's head, the fur on the rat. Much less detailed than the 5D2 shots.

Having eliminated noise reduction, diffraction and lens differences as a cause for the loss of sharpness, there is only one other possible cause - the AA filter.

These images show that the AA filter on the 5D3 is significantly stronger than that on the 5D2.

If you read the DPReview information, the DOF in these images is very limited due to 100mm at 1.5m distance. There is little detail in the fur because of the DOF, not the AA filter.

The point of focus in these images is the small japanese warrior figurine. If you look at the amount of detail there, even up to the ISO 25600, it is very good. Is there noise, especially in the OOF areas? Yes! But its well controlled, IMO.
