I don't think you're right Marlon. True the 7D does not have interchangeable focusing screens, but the 1Dx which has the same digital overlay viewfinder DOES. If Canon took what they did to the 1Dx, the 5D3 will have interchangeable focusing screens.

Only time will tell, as that is probably not at the top of the preview list for most right now.

GOD I HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT

I've been a long time precision screen user since it was announced in the Canon EOS 40D. You can tell that it does use one when there is a notch at the top of the mirror housing as shown below on the following examples...

5D Mark I (PLEASE IGNORE THE ARROW)

These Cameras DO NOT have the ability to have interchangeable screens:

- the notch is for the screen changing tool...
- The 5D Mark III has a tip?! GOD I HOPE THIS IS THE TOOL to change the screen!?!?!?

well there is a notch for something, rather than the flat edge.....

don't know what to truly make of it yet.

The 30D definitely had a replaceable screen...I had a Katz-Eyes split prism in mine.

Bob

let's reiterate things...

it didn't have a OEM screen. katzeyes screen can be handy BUT they are not user friendly. Sending cameras of to CPS and installing/reinstalling third party screens is NOT fun IMO.

AND You could have problems with metering which even katzeyes warns you of.

True that there is no source, but i am pretty sure that we all have to face this sometime. Maybe it's time to upgrade to the 1DX or MF... HMMMM... :D JK. That's $$$$$$ LOL

I was saving up for the 1Dx anyway - but if this is true, it's a rather puzzling state of affairs.

Okay and sorry, clear on that now. It was a 5 minute job and not a send away task but the support frame had to be detached unlike the hinges on the 1Dsrs bodies.

So what's the deal breaker?

It's the electronic viewfinder!

Like others have stated, the overlay for the focusing screen isn't the problem. You can still have interchangeable focusing screens and keep the overlay (the 1DX allows it). But I just don't know why canon doesn't allow it for the 5Dmkiii. It shouldn't be too hard to keep that feature (the menu options) in and have an easily accessible focusing screen.

I changed my focusing screen in my 7D, and I don't really want to go through that again. It's expensive, and I have to offset my EC when I look through the viewfinder (I also have to "re-adjust" it back when I use live view). Also, because my focusing screen is the K-3 type (like a katzeye), using some of the other metering modes (like spot metering) predictably is very difficult.

I just want a no-hassle, S-type focusing screen, w/ the menu option (so that I don't have to worry about metering).

But, I agree w/ you though...so many pluses, but that one big negative.

In the end, I'll wait and see (not like I can afford to get it soon anyway). Discussion in the other thread suggests that the AA filter may be just as strong as the one in the 7D, which means softer images out of camera. Also, need to see how the RAWs look, noise-wise. I don't think I'd consider this camera if it turns out that the image quality is worse than the 5D mk ii.

Its a price point thing. Canon has to retain some desirable features for the 1Dx.
