Some of my favorite portraits from this week. I can't wait for spring.

1. This guy is a local actor that I did head shots for. I grabbed a stylized shot for myself. His eyes are insane.

2. Another actor. His version had a fill light camera right but I flipped it off for this shot. No saturation boost in the eyes!

3. This is a local model that I've worked with. I love her face.

4. Same girl as #3. It was actually totally overcast and freezing outside when I took this; she only lasted a few shots before her nose got red and her teeth started to chatter. I can't decide if I like the color or B&W better.

Oh my god. Your skin textures are PERFECT. I wish I knew how to do that.

Love all of these. Are you using a beauty dish as your key light?

When I was a freshman in military school, the upperclassmen were always stunned that I could make my shoes shine better than their choroframs. They were convinced I had some secret trick. But really it was just a white t-shirt, black kiwi, and a lot of time. Skin retouching is basically the same thing. I do frequency separation (which is simple) and then go to work with the cloning and patch tools on the "high" layer. For men I don't do that much; for women I am pretty thorough. Time and patience are the "secret" ingredients.

Nope, I use a big octa. Except #4, which was natural light with a gelled strobe as a rim light. I've found the big octa to be more forgiving to work with, so that's what I usually reach for when I'm doing portraits.
