Right on the parking lot! Ouch. It didn't sound good. And now makes clicks when focusing. And the inner ring doesn't sit flush. Are these repairable? Are they even worth it? I paid $80 for it used here on POTN. Just chalk it up as a loss?

Meh. Oh well. Maybe I can just hold off and get a longer lens since I'm covering 50mm with the 24-70. I will miss the nifty in the meantime. :-(

I mean, you do have a 5D2 and a 24-70l...

Not like you don't have some money to spend... 80$ probably doesn't KILL you....

So take it apart and try and fiddle with it. If you actually make it totally inoperable- troll Craigslist for another one!!!

I don't get why people make assumptions about my income based on a couple possessions I have?

Instead of buying the nifty fifty, buy an old 50mm with adapter. You lose AF but if you drop it, it won't fail ;).

OP, you can fix it, gently squeeze the protruding inner ring section back into place with gentle, but firm, and increasing pressure, until it pops back into place

I have had it come apart into 2 pieces and fixed (but needed superglue)

???

Clearly people this day and age don't value money as much as I do

Woohoo. It popped back in. Works perfectly. Shots had a weird blurry/haze to them at f/1.8 especially. Now, good as new! Crisp and no clicks!! Thanks!

Awesome!

This is my 50mm f/1.8 after I glued it back together after it had fallen apart into 2 pieces :D

Lucky you--I'd have just tossed it up on ebay as parts, gotten back maybe $30 for it.

Great job! My D.I.L. dropped her nifty fifty (twice!) Camera shop said not repairable, so I had nothing to lose by playing with it. Ended up reading the dissassembly for the wrong (older version) lens. Tried to unscrew it and it popped, then focussed freely again, good as new.

Second time the part that mounted to the camera cracked. It snapped back in but I ended up ordering the part from Canon. Cost more to ship than to buy. That lens has at least nine lives!
