I stumbled upon this hummingbird while I was taking pictures of my kids at the neighborhood park. I hear this squeaking sound in a tree and see this tiny bird sitting on a branch. I didn't recognize it as a humming bird till it left the scene. About 15 minutes later it returned and thought I was ready for it.

They are fast little suckers!!

The first picture I took was the first time I was able to get it in flight while hovering instead of zooming around.

When I inspected the photo I was dissapointed to see specks in the picture, I thought I got dirt on my sensor. However when I looked at the 100% crop I noticed it was flies the bird was eating. Neat!

Again, my first wildlife shot... ever.. What do ya think?

I had no idea hummingbirds ate bugs. I thought they just sipped sugar water and licked the nectar out of flowers. Pretty neat shot.

Very nice catch Chris, man you are much quicker than me. I tried so many times to photograph the hummingbird during flight in our area and was never successful. Great job!

... does it really matter?i see with my eyes, i shoot with my fingers.

RobertXS, I'm right there with you - didn't know they ate bugs either. That was the only reason I got the shot, it hovered for what seemed like a quarter second to snap up a fly before it took off again!

joedelak, Thanks! Sometimes its better to be lucky than good I guess. I would have liked to get a closer shot but I had to keep my 70-200 all the way back just to keep that sucker in frame :)

You've got a good image there Chris, getting the Hummingbirds body in focus and the wings slightly blurred (to show motion) is what many people aim for. Well done :)

I find that very impressive Christopher!
I'm sure I couldn't repeat the feat you've accomplished w/your 1st wildlife images. We're certainly glad you chose to share with us.
It's my understanding that hummers catch a lot of insects when rearing young. Is there any chance they've bred and have offspring in your area?
