Wicked good, Phil. Great sequence in 4-6. Spray and pray frowned upon? It's the only way to get shots like that. Well done.

I don't think he had to pray. Looks to me like he knows exactly what he's doing. Great series.

FYI: EXIF copyright says 2015.

Yep, all of these are really nice. I can't see the exif info, so I'm a little confused on how you got everything in focus in #7 and #8 and still have fast enough ss to stop the action.

Here is the whole sequence on the fast break. #5 is headed to the bucket at full speed.

A. Fast Break--I'm tracking #5 white because he is a spectacular dunker. I push the button and keep it down. Ten frames per second.

All the shots were at 1/800 sec, ISO 4000, f/2.8 but #7 and #8 were shot with the 16-35mm at 35mm. The wide angle shots have a huge depth of field. The focal length is an even bigger factor than the f-stop in determining depth of field.

In the new Canon 8-15mm zoom, it is possible, at f/11, to set the focus at infinity and still have the end of the lens hood in focus!

http://www.the-digital-picture.com …-Fisheye-Lens-Review.aspx (external link)

At the other end of the spectrum, the 400mm at f/2.8 will have a depth of field of a mere 7 inches at 50 feet distance.

Great shots as usual Phil! Looks like that gym actually has some decent lighting.

Question for you though...in 2, 7 & 8 of the first post, it looks like you're near the left side (facing the hoop) of the lane and the others (first post only) you're more near the 3pt arc. Do you change spots each quarter or something?

Yes, I moved around. With the 70-200, I was between the 3-point arc and the corner. When using the 16-35 (late second half), I was under the hoop just wide of the lane line. The team in white was the only team I was shooting and access was somewhat limited depending on where the cheerleaders were located and how many there were. One team had far more cheerleaders than the other. They took up the whole baseline, the other squad took about 1/3 of it.

Too often the TV video guys will show up late and just move to within a foot or two of the baseline and impede the view of the still photogs. I changed sides once because of that.

This gym was well lit. I had just spent all day shooting bowling (mainly black uniforms) at ISO 12,800, f/2.8 and 1/400 (Ugh); so this venue was great!

BTW, Here in Kansas, the Liberals sit on one side (see sign in pic #7) and the Conservatives sit on the side with the balcony in the background.

;) Ok, I made that up.;)

Lol...didn't even notice the Liberal sign in the background! I never really thought about moving around, especially since I usually shoot for one team...well, except at half to change sides. Might have to keep that in mind for next year.

I hear ya on the cheerleaders...we (me and a guy from the paper) had to ask some to move this past Friday night as they took up the entire baseline. They were nice enough to move around for us and gave us the lane for shooting.

Ah, good 'ol bowling alley's....spend a ton of time there in my youth, haven't shot it yet though. I guess I should stop complaining about dark gyms :)

I need a 1D IV. Hopefully the 5DIII will come close to the 1D.
