Do you think the 6 fps can cut it in sports?

Believe it or not, there was a time when the best sports photographers in the world shot film with manual focus lenses and manual cameras and no motor drives.

I am one of those people. Just thought I'd get a heated discussion going.

It won't make any difference.

Camera position and a photographer's timing are important. Camera frame rate is far less important. As long as there's a clear view of the action, the camera is pointed in the right direction at the right time and the shutter button is pushed when the action happens, any Canon DSLR can handle any sports work.

And most of their output sucked too, if we judge it relative to the very best work being created today. It isn't that they lacked talent, but people with just as much talent are working with much better equipment now. I can go back and look at old sports periodicals and the difference is striking.

Another difference now is that legions of hobbiests are cranking out images that are better than the high end work of top professionals from 30 years ago. The technology really helps, I gotta admit it.

To the OP - six fps is kind of slow for the kind of situations where a burst is going to be the way to get a shot. But I've done quite a bit of sports work with a 5D, and just timing a single shot is the best approach for a huge fraction of shots.

When a burst works better (and believe me, there are times when a burst is better) the faster the frame rate the more likely you are going to be to get the exact moment you really want. With six fps, you'll just miss that timing fairly often.

Honestly I can't remember a time where I shot more than 3 frames in a burst. Can it? Sure. It all comes down to learning your equipment.

There are some things that I like the 1D series more for such as the fast autofocus and durability of the bodies in weather.
