I was thinking of getting a mk4 until I saw the full specs of the 5D3.

Maybe a bit early to decide as the 5D3 is not available yet but:
From a price point of view, they are very similar.
New 5D3 3.5K VS used 1Dmk4 ~3.5K - 3.7K

Thing that I want/need:

Good AF
High Iso / less noise IQ
Better DR
I don't care about the build, and the 1D body could benefit for vertical shooting but not essential.

On papers, it looks like the 5D3 has everything and it could be even better than the mk4 in those areas.

What do you guys think?

I think until some real world results are available, its impossible to answer that question accurately.

Same here but I er towards the mkIV simply becasue it is proven, tracks like a devil and can do 10fps....and f8 AF.....and build....and weather proofing....and a good chance it will hold its value better than the 5D if you decide to sell it and buy a 5D after 6 months ;)

You say you don't care about the build quality (have you ever held a 1D body though?), so for your shooting style do you want the 10FPS, the ability to AF at F8, or the extra reach of an 1.3x crop?

As you said there is no real way for a fair comparison till some real photographers get hands on time with a production 5D3, but it sounds like if you answered no to all or most of the above question then the 5D3 would be for you.

As mentioned above it shouldn't hurt to buy the MKIV used, shoot with it for a while, and if you decide the 5D3 will be better for you, by then it will be well established, have a proven track record, any initial bugs worked out, and probably better pricing. Don't think you should loose much on a MKIV used in the next 9-12mo.

This is an awesome topic; because I was wondering the same thing.

I'd like to see how this unfolds.
I'm going to stick around with my 5D2 until some "real life" images/videos from the 5D3 are posted by actual users and not on canon's sample page before I decide if I want the 5d3 or 1d4.

I really like full frame. I've been using only FF (5dc & 5d2) since 2008 on my 5DC & I don't think I can go back to crop.

We'll all have to wait and see since both bodies seem super similar spec wise asides for the fps & having the vertical grip.

I had a IV, but unless I was shooting sports, the 5D2 ended up getting used more often. IMO, the quality of the pics were just better, plus I really like the smaller size. I sold the IV and am looking forward to getting the 5D3.

Heck the 5d3 will render the 1dsIII into a over-priced brick.

Thanks guys, exactly what I think from what you are saying.
I would love to have an AF, high ISO IQ of the MK4 and the 1.3x crop will get me some xtra reach for the type of photo I do: 6-8 FPS, good AF, good high ISO IQ.

My combo 5D2/7D is good but there's a lot of times I just wish the 5D2 had better AF and the 7D had better high ISO IQ.
I can't wait for real world review of this cam.

If you don't need the faster frame rate, 1.3x crop, and the more robust weather sealing, this is a no-brainer. 5D3 all the way, provided what's on paper are working in the real world.

Images off my 1DMKIV are simply stunning, especially in studio at 100 iso and they were beautiful when i needed 6400. I have a 5D2, i think its great as well. I don't shoot in servo much because ive always got a flash on my camera at weddings but when i shot in servo i have not experienced any locking issues however i know other have. Gonna push this camera a bit in the spring and find out where the limitations are at with servo.

That being said, my opinion is that the 1DMKIV is the best camera ive used to date. I locks everyplace i put it and the images and IQ is the best in canons line up right now.

Bought the MKIV in anticipation of this release because it does so many things that i want my cameras to do. I love the 1.3 crop factor and the 35L on this thing blows me away. I do weddings and portrait work to pay the bills and i play around and shoot some wildlife and sports for my playtime. so the MKIV does it all for me. I cant tell yet but from what i see being posted,, MKIV files and 5D3 files look dam close at noise levels and IQ. I think they are both very usable at 6400-8000.

For me, MKIV was the best choice, but we also have a 5D2 and a MKIII. I want my next camera to be the 1Dx, pending on what its going to be on the market for. Im doing nothing until i see tests from digital picture and DP review after 1Dx and 5D3 are tested and conclusions are made. But either way i feel like i have it all with what i have and it could get a lot better depending on how these cameras test out. I could easily go 5D3 if it tests great. But if a 1Dx blows the 5D3 away and its another stop better in iso performance and a few steps better in IQ,,,,thats the way i will go,,,IF it stays below the 7K pricepoint.
