When I used to own both the 17-40L along with the 24-105L, I would sometimes use the 17-40 on my 1D Mark IV as a wide angle zoom. When I did so, I would mount the hood from the 24-105L on the lens, as it fit OK, was way better for protection, and actually fit in the bag unlike the awful hood that comes with the 17-40.

I moved to the 16-35 II, and since this lens has 82mm threads the 77mm hoods don't work anymore.

By getting a 24-70L II, I will get an 82mm thread size hood that fits on the 16-35 II when I use it on the 1D4.

So....good justification for a $2300 lens, or is this a stretch?

Filters would be the better argument than hoods to me.

It's only a stretch if you don't have the money in the bank. Otherwise; I say get whatever the heck you want! After all every lens we want is necessary.....or they would not make them. :)

When it comes to thread size, and the way good filters are priced, the logical argument here would be for filters, not lens hoods.

I should mention, somebody is going to get a hell of a deal on my lightly used 24-70. It's very sharp.

I'm picking up a 5D3 and a 24-70 II. My goal is to use the smaller/lighter 24-70 II to fill the low light role of my current 24-70 and the vacation handy role of my 24-105L.

The 24-105L goes to my eldest daughter as a gift along with the old 5D, so I kinda still have access to the 24-105L.

Anyway.....watch that used board because I'll be selling a pretty nice 24-70L within a month or two, and it is a very nice lens.

Getting the new 24-70 II doesn't make any sense with your current kit. If filters are important to you, you should sell the 16-35 f/2.8 and stick with the 24-70 f/2.8 Mark I, 17-40, and 24-105. All of those have 77mm filters. You'll save yourself a bunch of dough. The same 77mm will also work on your 70-200 and your 100-400.
