Canon 50mm 1.4 is my recommendation.

To answer your question the larger the aperture the more light can pass through the lens (i.e good for low lighting situations). Apertures don't come much larger than f1.4 without making a serious dent to your bank account.

Don't cheap out on glass, they make all the difference. Personally I'd rather get a good second hand lens rather than a cheap & nasty new lens if money was tight.

Don't bother with the 50 1.8 but the Tamron would be very useful for you. That would be all the lens you you need for a while.

Speedlight.. 430 EX II.

+1 or a 580exII.. External flash should be your second "lens" as it adds that much to your photography... Then after your flash- a 55-250.. But flash second..

Most of the shots at night? Flash for portraits, tripod for landscapes, reverse ring adaptor for macro.
You not going to get good landscapes at night, so 18-55 will do the job.
For portraits and macro you could get dedicated macro lens, instead of reversing 18-55 for macro. Macro lens in 80-105 range will serve you well for portraits as well.
Check lens forum for list of pictures taken with different lenses. This is how I search for new lens to buy.

I agree totally. I was initially going to buy a new walkaround lens last year, but after reading a few threads in the lighting section, I went for a flash (580EX2) instead. Honestly the best thing I have bought for my photography.............except for my 135L.

And to the OP, don't just think of a flash as a night add on, it can be just as useful in full sun as it is in no sun.

landscape, portrait, macro,

Given you want to do this, I would go a recommended zoom (or simply use the one you have) and buy some extension tubes for your macro work. Of course a flash will be useful for portraits and macro anyway ;)
