I currently have a 400d, with a tamron 17-50, 70-200f2.8mk2 lens and a 50mm f1.8 prime and currently shoot various things from street pics to landscape.

i am not a paid tog so only do this as a hobby. Is 5dmk3 overkill? The 5dmk2 is out of teh question because of its AF so what do u reckon?

7d or 5dmk3?

From what I have seen, these two cameras share the same image quality. The only real difference is that the 7D is crop and the 5D3 is full frame. Also the 5D3 has more features.

It is up to you to decide if these extra features is worth the steep price tag.

7d or 5dmk3?

I upgraded from a 400D to a 50D and then to a 5D2. I think the AF of the 5D2 is better than the 400D and for "amateur" shooting quite sufficient. I shoot landscape, portrait, sports, wildlife and the lot with the 5D2 and never felt that the AF was letting me down. If you like, have a look at the various sets on my Flickr to see that AF is not really an issue... :)

For the time being I am happy with my 5D2 and will only upgrade to the MkIII when the price comes down.

If you have the money and can wait get the 5d mk3. If not get the 5d mk2.

...thinking I will drop my 5D and 5D2, keep the 7D and get the 5D3. Crop factor is hard to let go of, unless better detail with the 5D3 helps bridge the 1.6 gap. If I were starting from somewhere else, looking at the 7D vs. the 5D3, it would be the 5D3 for all of its newest tech, IQ, features and LCD.

...think the price is steep though...

You need to read up on these two types of bodies. Very different applications. Neither is an upgrade to the other since they are used for different types of shooting. To break it down to it's simplest form: 5D = weddings. 7D = Sports. There's actually much more to it than that but upgrading to a FF isn't in everyone's best interest. I have no plan on ever doing so myself. I love my fps and 10-22 too much!

BIG price difference, especially as you'd need a new standard zoom with 5D3. I'd spend the money on glass unless you really know why a FF camera would be better for YOUR needs.

For the price of one 5D3, you could buy two 7D's.

Or you could buy one 7D and add a very good lens to the mix.

I can tell you the AF system on the 7D is far better than the AF system on the 5D2.

I have owned and used both.

I cannot speak for the AF performance on the 5D3 because it isn't out yet.

I don't know about that image quality statement. The current 5d2 has better image quality than the 7d...I would think the new 5d3 will improve on that.

As stated above, buy the 7D and a good (L) lens, which there is documentation for, versus the same amount of money for something the public has not purchased yet.

5dmk2 = wedding yes but now the 5dmk3 has 6fps and 61 AF points, i'd say the mk3 is the best all roudn camera that can do almost everything well

I heard the 5dmk3 IQ is not as good as the 7d let alone the 5dmk2 according to recent sampled shots?

I'd say get the 5D3. Or the 5D2. Unless you are shooting sports, wildlife, motorsports, the 5D2 should be more than enough.

The naysayers are saying that the 7D has similar IQ as the 5D3. Until you see substantial reviews, it's probably wise to not come to any conclusion at this point. It reminds me of the A77/NEX7 debate. People were saying it's crap blah blah.. Once the reviews went out, it seems like the IQ wasn't too shabby at all. All I'm saying is wait for legit and thorough reviews.

The mk2 is tempting but its the AF that is a big question mark to me. one cross type AF points and its bang on the middle liek my 400d? thats one the reasons why i dont like my 400d, the AF system is shocking for anything that slightly moves.

I don't see how you can even compare the 7D vs the 5D3. They're not even in the same ballpark.
