tsktsktsk....SEVAN....leave Alan alone, he is sensitive...he must be "manstrating"... :p Or the trauma of missing the shin-dig this year. Of course he has a pretty cool reason.

Dwight check you PM's...thought I sent the email addy. Old one works fine but sent another burn-before-reading one as well.

And for Sevan, I'll take the Digic 5+ over the Digic 4, the useable 102,400 ISO, and the 61 focal points over the 9, the 6 frames per second over the 3.9, the seven stop bracketing for HDR (need I go on?) any day.

I am relived that you 'don't match lists'. I think my POTN Gear List is up to date if you change your mind.

Robert, you have email.

SEVAN, it isn't the camera, it's the photographer, as we both well know!

One from the show.
QUOTED IMAGE

Hey neat shot...love shooting fireworks. Glad ya got some time to get out with your cool new toy. Like I said...hate ya man...but I'll suffer with my new K5... :D After that last year+ for you two, ya deserve a nice treat so enjoy it, I know ya will...btw, Sara spoils you doesn't she...hehehehe

Maybe soon we can go try and shoot that bridge? I have a few beachy-type spots I wanna try for some long exposure attempts as well...so bring a lunch...and your climbing gloves to get down to the beach. I know where there is an old whale bone yard between Goleta & Gaviota. Haven't been there in decades but think I can find it still.

hey...the fog just went *poof* in the last half-hour or so...dunno how I missed it, I mean I am sitting here at Starbucks wasting heatbeats with the whole world open to view. But I just looked out the windows and there was the sun...so maybe tonight will be time to drag out my new K5 and shoot the fireworks. Not sure though, might pass again this year.

Dwight...got you note will get back to ya...

We decided not to go to Solvang after all, too.

I knew that! I doubt killjoy did ;) Older gear that produces better photos or the same as the newer gear only means one thing, the guy behind the camera of the older gear is better, he doesn't rely on his newer gear to do the job for him. Hahahahaha JK Big A.

Yeah, why do I feel the need to come back here and defend myself?

Dwight, if it's as you say, the photographer and not the gear, then why do you have so many cameras, and feel the need to buy the latest and greatest every time a new model comes out?

Here's an excerp from your gear list (which I finally looked at).
"Bodies
1D Mark IV (x2) [Two 1DX's on pre-order]
1Ds Mark III
1D Mark III (x2) [Will be given to my partner shortly]
5D Mark III (w/grip)
G1X
1V HS w/PB-E2 [So I can use up all that film I found in my freezer.]"

You guys all oooh and ahhhh at your new gear every year. "Oh, look what I got!"
I bought a new body because my four year old 50D was starting to give me issues. Why shouldn't I buy the best that I can afford? Why should I buy an older camera that has three or more year old technology like a 7D or even a 5DMkII?
Having been in the tech indsustry for several years, I know how fast these things get outdated.

I get a new piece of gear, and get lambasted (external link) for it. (hot link for those of you who are unable to figure out how to use Google).

It's just not right.

Some people hunt with a gun. I use a Canon.

LOL ... I don't 'feel the need', I just want the latest and my business pays for it. But you will NEVER hear me say I do better photography because I have better equipment. I know tons of guys who aren't race car drivers but who oogle and leer at every new high performance sports car ... and some of them buy and/or trade up to each new one that comes along in their favorite flavor, but that doesn't help them drive better ... although it may help attracting women (I just read an article that says that women are attracted to men with fast cars, as sad as that is!) Anyway, if you look at my equipment list and then my photography, that's pretty much the proof that it must be the photographer and not the equipment that makes great images.

If it makes you feel any better, I wish I had the 5DIII. I love tech and love having the latest & greatest... but it has nothing to do with "showing it off". :o I don't even have a gear list... and I have a respectable spread of gear. I'm fortunate in that regard, and I put a lot of time and effort into deciding what I am going to get and why.

Regardless, it is the photographer who ultimately decides if the image is going to be worth a damn. Once you have enough talent to take a good to spectacular image, the gear kicks in and gives you an edge with better IQ, more pixels to play with and the technical ability to actually pull off the shot. I'm like Dwight in that respect... I prefer to have equipment that is better than my abilities. That way I always know it was I who could have done better. Besides, if you can afford it and it makes you happy, why the hell not have it. :D

Not to point out the obvious, but I don't believe anyone in our group is the "show-off" sort. I don't really think they would fit in, as there isn't really room in our group for superficial 'tards like that. No one in this group (thankfully) cares how big your "anything" is. We have much more important things to discuss like politics, religion, guns, cameras, naked ladies, clothed ladies, tall ladies, short ladies, ladies in general, um, I know there was more, but I seem to have gotten stuck...

Wow, I have to admit I am a bit puzzled by some of the hostilities or negativity that I am reading. When did it become ok to attack someone for what gear they have choosen to purchase or commenting how to improve ones shot without, oh I dont know pointing out the positives as well. You put on smiley faces and think well its ok, I am just giving Killjoy a bad time. I may be biased but I am sorry if I take it personally, when someone I care about is being raked over the coals for what I am just not too sure. I am an outsider looking in and I am really disappointed in some of you. Getting new gear I think is exciting and you want to share it with those you think will appreciate that. I guess I was under the impression this was a place where you can be supported in what ever you do. I am sorry if I think both the gear and the person are equally important, but if you think you can get the same picture with a polaroid than with the newest and greatest well more power to you. I am not normally vocal about things but this has bothered me enought to comment. So no smiley faces or winks or anything else. I think it is time to let this discussion go before someone regrets saying something and not able to take it back!!!

Actually, I think Sevan's comments were made in good faith, perhaps defending that he doesn't have the newest but likes the images. But really, I didn't even think it amounted to our normal chest butting. Having said that, I agree, it's time to let it go and move on to selection of activities for those attending.

I must have missed the point of the gear posts, I thought they were all in fun. Something to be said about not being to bright, I never know when I'm being picked on.:o:lol:

Dwight, Lynn and I are planning on getting into Solvang, CA on Wednesday so any photo shoot lesson you have set up is great with us. :D
