Best for Landscapes: 1Dx, 1DsIII or 5DIII?

Any wild speculation on which of these will be Canon's finest landscaping rig?

well for landscape you want resolution and to keep weight down - easy choice would be the 5Diii although it's unlikely to outperform the 5Dii

I prefer the 1 series for a couple of reasons...battery life is pretty significant unless you add a grip and then you wasted your advantage. When it's 30 degrees you need every bit of battery you can spare. Weather sealing is also important to me...shooting waterfalls, desert, sand, whatever can be nerve-wracking on a 5D2 whereas on the 1 series I pretty much know I'm good. The 5D3 sure is pretty though...I bet it or the 1Dx are spectacular for astro work

Really? I'd bet you real live money that the 5Diii will no doubt out perform the 5Diii in every IQ metric.

To the op I'd say the 5Diii would be best for landscape photos. The 1 series are bigger and heavier and their FPS and advanced AF could be wasted on landscape photos. As for battery life it's cheaper and lighter to just buy another battery over a grip...

except perhaps practical real life landscape work.... for landscape you are typically using low ISO so little benefit from the 5D3 there, and manual focus/live view is usually good enough (certainly don't need the fast AF of the 3). If you think the 5D3 is going to provide significant improvements in image quality under these conditions I will take your money.

You make good points for pure landscape work, which is what the op asked about.

Nobody is talking about the low ISO performance and DR yet. My fingers are crossed that the new, not updated sensor will not disappoint. It's a lot of $$ for an "upgrade" for those that have a 5dii, but it's gonna smack the 5dii all over the place in real life usage including landscape work.

I guess we'll have to wait to find out. I've got a pocket full of hot pennies for you if I'm wrong.;)

Just curious whether there are any further developed questions on this question. Now that the 5d3 exists, does it look better than the 1DsIII to anyone? So far it really does not look better to me. We'll see about the 1Dx.

Currently my vote is for the 5D3. But, and its a big but. If Canon take a sensible pill and wake up to the fact that they need to update the 1Ds3, then I'd guess that would beat the 5d3. The 1dX is a non starter, nice camera but built for a different job.

Is it the 15% reduction in resolution relative to the 1DsIII that's turning you off? The 1Dx is certainly optimized for other work, but that doesn't mean it isn't the best at landscapes, too.

From what little I've seen, I'd still take the 1DsIII over the 5D3 for landscapes. The IQ looks identical (maybe even a hair better on the 1DSIII) and the build quality is better. I also prefer the square body, but others could prefer smaller and lighter -- just not me.

Why? Just curious. What iso range are you usually working with in astrophotography.

Well I believe you are wrong. There is nothing in all the tests that have been done that points to any improvements in the 5d3 for landscape work.

Have you seen what a modern medium format digital back kit will cost? The digital backs alone are enough to turn my hair white. We are talking second mortgage country. Not expensive, lets call it extortionate.

I use a 1DS3 and it performs under all conditions beautifully. For landscape work I can't imagine a 5D3 or 1DX providing significantly better files.
