I've seen people say that when they shoot in RAW+Jpg they don't shoot at max JPG quality, usually 'medium'. Why is that? If you don't plan on using the jpg anyhow, why not just shoot RAW? I'm not being smart or judgmental, just wondering. I'm currently shooting at max IQ, but if I can save some room and time transferring that would be great. Room hasn't even been close to an issue so far, but ya never know. :)

Thanks,

~Steve

I shoot small jpeg and raw because my wife wants what she wants NOW. I process the raw files to my liking from there.

I used to shoot small jpeg because it is good enough for most purposes. I'm not a professional, so its saved me from having to process RAW files for snapshots.

I shoot RAW and Full size JPEG format. If my raw card takes a dump, Ive got full size files backed on the other card-- strictly a safety measure for me.

I can see what Mike is doing as a safety measure as one reason to shoot as large & fine as possible a JPEG (though personally I'd just set up a dual slot camera to backup the RAW files, if all that worried about accidental loss of image).

For most folks though, you can always make a large JPEG from the RAW later, if needed (or a TIFF or a PSD or whatever). So most of the time for most of us there's really no need when shooting RAW + JPEG for the JPEG to be a big file that uses up a lot of space on the mem card.

Some reasons to shoot RAW + JPEG might call for a particular size JPEG, though... For example if shooting sports with an editor who is taking your images and uploading them to a site online or sending them for immediate print use on deadline, the end use might call for a minimum JPEG size.

But if just using them for immediate gratification or as thumbnail reference files yourself, might as well conserve space and make the JPEGs small.

I also shoot raw and small jpeg as I then put some of them in a slideshow on my laptop at weddings and don't have time to process or deal with large image sizes.

Until recently, I shot RAW+Jpeg because I could use the raw files for my own processing, and easily hand off JPEGs to family members for quick easy viewing. However, Lightroom likes to import both version to my catalog, which I dont want it to do, so I just shoot only raw and make people wait till Im done all the necessary editing to see the photos  And I shot small JPEG because no one has a purpose for 21MP files when a simple 2MP is enough for casual viewing on a computer or iPad.

Only shooting RAW myself, and never have seen the use for taking jpegs as well. I always process most of my images before posting/delivering them to clients, so I have no use for quick handouts of jpegs. Also, i usually take alot of photos, with many of them from the same angle, just to make sure i have a sharp one, so any instant-slideshow from my jpegs would seem very long and boring.

The first thing I do when I transfer pics from my camera is add a folder for the date, then set up two folders, one for jpg's & one for RAW's.
