As the 5D MK III is coming with this new HDR mode, I'm guessing this is simply a software thing. Is it likely for this to trickle down to existing cameras such as the 7D and 5D MK II with firmware updates?

I'm thinking that Canon won't want to give consumers a reason for not upgrading. The HDR feature is probably a simple and almost costless software modification. But why give it out for free and eliminate any enticement it might add for buying a new more expensive camera.

I wonder if this is something the magic lantern couldn't or is already doing?

I believe I read that it was possible due to the Digic 5 processor so I don't think it's simply a software/firmware issue.

Very unlikely to trickle down. They want us to buy new cameras

The chances of this trickling down is zero. Canon will (rightfully so) use it as a feature for you to upgrade to.

My belief in the addition of this component for the 5DIII is to entice more novice processing individuals to purchase the camera. This way they do no have to learn how to do it in software or purchase the software either.
Many P&S models have this as part of the in camera software, and these individuals really like it. It is not an enticement to "catch all of the fish"....just some of them.

just a few of my thoughts...

Yes, Canon isn't Apple, no trickle down. For example they could have added 5 shot AEB for years probably via firmware and never did even while Nikon and others were rocking it.

Apple do that? How come there's no Siri on the iPhone 4? Anyway, thats a discussion for another day.

Hardware reasons.... Why has apple allowed iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4 iPhones upgrade to iOS 5.0....

I wonder it the 5D3's built-in HDR can do this with five frames? These were taken with the 7D, 5 shots, AEB +-1 & +-2 w/ one frame discarded then processed in PhotoMatix.

HDR mode only offers 3 exposure capture. Obviously there are better alternatives to HDR just like there are better ways of adjusting contrast or saturation than in camera. But my use for this would be to save space on my card if I wanted to capture a HDR shot whilst out. I went to the Blue Mountains last year and wanted the option of taking HDR shots nearly everywhere. Took up quite a lot of space on my card. This HDR mode can delete the original exposures.

If can AEB 3, 5, 7, 9 shots but I think the HDR feature only uses three. But u can tell it +- 1, 2, or 3 stops I think.

I agree for sure. But that's all contingent that the results are great...
