Clarksdale, Mississippi bluesman Earnest 'Guitar' Roy at last weekend's Bona Fide Blues Festival in Memphis. Shot at an outdoor stage with challenging lighting on a cool, drizzling night ... but the music made it all worthwhile.

You sure made the best of the lighting here... You've got "cool" and "hot" working well together, great detail and some nice textures. Lots to absorb in this shot. 8-)

Thank you, Pekka! I'm sure some members here might have imagined that POTN might begin winding down. But that doesn't make the news any less disappointing. So generous of you to allow us to go along for the ride. As a result you gave us a way to help each other become better photographers. But there's still so much more to learn.

I went back and looked at it. It's the typical crappy house lighting that they reserve for the openers. That venue has a couple of spots stage left and right that are either purple or orange that really destroy anything that's not being hit with a white spot. Even then, most times there is a nasty purple/blue or orange cast on the fringes of everything.

Roman Barten-Sherman, a 12y/o blues guitarist. Absolutely incredible. He opened for David Bromberg Quintet.

Great compostition for sure.

It does seem to me you could get the noise down by taking the ISO down 1 stop and opening up the aperture 1 stop? Just a suggestion.

Thanks, and true that. Sometimes I get a bit caught up in the musical moment and get a little distracted from the exposure values. And I likely could have done a little more to clean up the noise in post. Appreciate the comments!

I'd love to catch a David Bromberg show sometime. Got any shots of him to share? Did he have a brass section playing with him?

Here, in between the Straight No Chaser shots and Roman's. (external link)

No, it was just the quintet, fiddle, bass, guitar and drums.

Local rock band Stonehurst in Christchurch, NZ. Had to deal with an overly aggressive smoke machine.

Irish singer/songwriter Paul Brady. He's written hits for Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, and many more. He's an excellent performer as well. He used only one mic to pick up his guitar and vocal. It's a very dynamic style.
