Now that looks like a tough venue to shoot. Great job!

Thanks. I wasn't paying attention... I could have dropped the shutter down to about 1/200 and shot at 2.8 and 6400. I usually have the ISO limit set to 6400. Live an learn. I'm still happy with what I got.
Those red/pink lights are a PITA.

The band is Mullett an 80's rock/metal cover band. The bass player is Teddy Lee and the drummer is Jef Leppard . The venue is the Cannery Music hall . Admission is free for me. They let me go shoot whenever I want. These were taken a couple of weeks ago.

First-timer and new to the game. $15 gig at a local Friday night spot ... never got to find out the name of the band. Canon SL1 with 50mm F/1.4 ... trying not to look like I knew what I was doing (fair representation of the truth) or any kind of serious photographer.

Hey ... stage lights are quite a challenge!

[Edit] This is in Abuja, Nigeria btw. And c. $15 means it's not an easily affordable hang-out for most.

Looks like you made the most of the stage lighting, especially with the first shot. 8-) The older stage lights were bad enough but the newer LED lighting seems even worse. They've got a bit of a flicker to them which can leave you with some unexpected results, especially if you're shooting without a flash.

Thank you, Pekka! I'm sure some members here might have imagined that POTN might begin winding down. But that doesn't make the news any less disappointing. So generous of you to allow us to go along for the ride. As a result you gave us a way to help each other become better photographers. But there's still so much more to learn.

I was experimenting .. trying something outside my comfort zone that I was interested in learning from and I just wanted to get on with it quietly underneath the radar.

Going in there with a 5Div and a big lens I'd have attracted attention (friendly enough but still getting in the way). Also, I didn't want to be the guy in the muscle car driving with 'L' plates. That's just me.

It was interesting to try out the SL1. I expected it to deliver and it did. That said, I also expected I'd have to shoot at ISO 1600 or 3200 ... but ended up at 800 most of the time so it wasn't a very hard test in the end.

Thanks for kind words.

Of course, I didn't put up shots where the lighting totally defeated me. ;-)a There is a slight green cast to the light that is stage left/front angled stage right/back in the first shot (the main one catching the singer) but it's really not an issue. And the blue light catching the drummer and the stage left/back is nicely moody. So things were made as easy as possible for me.

But I haven't come up with a good way to deal with situations like the one just below.

I did manage to come up with some post processing to reduce the intensity of the red colour cast but I reckon I overdid the adjustment. I think it leaves the image rather lifeless and artificial looking. Anyway, I'm enjoying figuring this stuff out. Always good to try something new.

Sometimes you can process these pictures to acceptable and sometimes not, the last resort being convert to B&W. Benon sells some Lightroom Presets for a couple bucks that will deal with the normal problems quickly: http://www.bjwok.com/ (external link)

In Photoshop you can use Selective Color, Color Balance and Saturation to bring down or change the colors to suit.

I have no idea if this is really the case, but older incandescent stage lights didn't seem to be as intense or saturated. Some of the LED lighting seems to be from a completely different color spectrum and at least some cameras and editing software don't seem to know how to handle it. You try to shift things around to eliminate a blue cast in a couple areas and the rest of the picture turns a kind of sickly yellow. Or maybe I'm just too heavy handed with my attempts at color correction.

You are correct the newer LED's are awful for trying to capture pictures with digital sensor's. I wonder if film has the same problem but I gave up on film many years ago, maybe somebody else can answer. I also wonder when they will work on the digital sensors to capture this odd light better in the future.
