So last night my good friends The String Assassins played at a local theater where I have free access to the whole place. I placed two speedlites on low power behind the band. Unfortunately I was never able to get both of them to fire simultaneously although when I use them at home this always works. Typical stress inducer when the pressure was on.... but it was no big deal, it was just an experiment. They were at 1/128 power. Now I have to dig in and find out why I had problems.

I think the effect with the backlighting from the speedlites, the colored stage lights and fog are pretty cool for a project that was mired in technical difficulties!!! These guys are great, high energy, and great guys.

I like the effect of the 1 light too, we'd never have known there were two if you didn't say something... The first shot is great also. IR type flashes tend to blind out with bright stage lights and when the artist step in front of them. The RF type flashes or triggers don't have this problem. Since IR flashes need line if sight to both flashes from 1 trigger it's a tough situation. I shoot a lot of small bars that have terrible lighting and if the band will let me I put remote flashes in front of their monitors and turn them way down to get white light in there faces without disturbing the audience which works well.

I discovered this that night. Line of sight and also having them go to sleep mode while I am up in the light booth!!!! Need to change how I do this. Some shots only one flash went off for some reason. Lots of technical problems, it was an experiment. Needs work....thanks

How do you trigger multiple speedlites in a venue and which lites do you use?

I use the older PocketWizard RF triggers on my Canon 580ex flashes but the new 600 series Canon flashes are both RF and IR flashes so they will do the same thing but are quite expensive. I also use the PocketWizard AC3 trigger controller that makes things a lot easier.

The good thing is that PocketWizard stuff is pretty cheap now as well as the 580ex flashes. This setup will work at 100+ yards and light doesn't affect them so there will be no problem in most music venues.

National blues artist Tinsely Ellis at local venue this evening. Just started looking at the output. JL Fulks, a local blues artist now based in Nashville and fast becoming a national act, was opener. Third year in a row for me for that bill. Both are fantastic performers.

You nailed 'em good! Especially with the crazy mixed stage lighting. ;-)a

I decided to see if my 1" sensor Sony could handle the dim lighting in a local jazz club. It definitely left a lot to be desired and I had to denoise quite a bit, but the performer was very pleased with the end result.

Thanks Ed. The artist agrees with you and liked that one so much he used it for his Facedbook profile.

Trawling through photos from years past, because I'm not shooting at the moment.

A couple of the very talented local musicians who frequent the nearby 'Eumundi Markets'.
