Self portrait focusing

Thinking about buying a G12/G1X to go in my boat when fishing by myself to do self portraits.
The idea of flipping the screen around to compose the shot sounds like it might be the ticket.
Is there a setting in these camera's that will set focus right before the shot is taken on the timer mode or do you need a remote wired/wireless ?

You could always use the face mode.
I haven't tried this but AFAIK in smiley mode the camera ( G1X) will fire when it sees you or the fish grin !!!

and there's me thinking who the heck will use that feature.

Maybe I'm wrong but from what I'm reading in the manuals even in those modes you still have to prefocus so not sure that will work.

as I recall you can set a manual focus distance in a CF setting, with the deep DOF and what I would assume to be a wide focal length I wouldn't think you'd have a problem.

I talked to Canon and the rep suggested that also.
He also said that as far as he knew=(not sure) that setting the camera in auto mode would auto focus the camera just before the shutter was released in timer mode ?
If one of you guys could check that to see I would appreciate it.

I've just got to decide if I want to save $400 or spend $400 extra on the G1X

I sometimes use the two second timer mode with my G11 on a tripod if I don't want to bother with my wired remote shutter release. Yes, the camera's auto focus is activated and the camera focuses properly after the timer runs down but before the shutter is released.

Speaking again about the G11, but I'm sure the G12 is the same -- you don't have to always have the auto focus set to the center of the frame, either. You can move it to whatever location is desired, which is handy if, say, your main subject is off to one side but you want to include something going on in the background.
