Hi, have had this lens for 2 years now. Its my walkaround lens and its consistently given me fantastic results.

The last 10 days, the quality has just dropped. The issues are just too many to list:

- auto focus is iffy
- I can hardly measure the sharpness as there are no edges to the snaps
- the colors are washed out....completely

When I do a manual fix, everything is back to normal....I have to hold IT in place and things are fine....but this can't be a permanent fix.

And the manual fix is to hold the ring in its place. Didn't ever realize how much of the len's powers came from it :).

Seriously, any ides of how to fix it.....its broken at the place its leaning on the lens hood....

There are no edges to the snaps??

You do a manual fix and everything is back to normal? What is a manual fix? Holding the ring in place? What ring?

You have to hold IT in place? What is "IT"?

Take another picture without the hood on and don't underexpose the shot this time so we can see what you are talking about.

OK, my attempt at humor is not working. The pic was taken with a P&S.

The issue is that the red ring on the 24-105 is broken..... and no, the lens is not performing badly. Just thought I will play up the power of the 'red ring' :)

And surprise, a google search on broken red ring shows up results only about 24-105.....

Must be an inferior red plastic ring ;

It's worthless now. One ring to rule them all... and you broke it.

I was also initially confused. I thought the red ring was a red circle you did in Photoshop showing the problem.

Wow, I thought I was trying to find something wrong in the red ring... The RING was the wrong!

Anyways, now that I know they may have issues I will be careful with mine, dont want to make the lens worthless. :P

Actually I just saw this thread and was going to respond that the photo was not taken with a 24-105L since the aperture used was f2.8
