you could try the 35mm 1.4 samyang manual, the 85mm 1.8, and the higher priced but excellent IQ,speed, and more, the 135mm f/2 L

yeah, was looking at the 85 and 100 2.8, both are in my price range and will probably be added over time, which is one reason why I asked in the 1st place, already having the 50, if there's not a huge diff between that and the 30, would I be better served to go with say the 85 to add to my options for now? so many choices... I want them all.

thanks!

the usual questions asked are, what are your needs, what camera type do you use, cropped, or fullframe, and so on.

My prime kit is 20/2.8, 28/1.8, 50/1.4, 85/1.8 and 135/2. I use these with both crop cameras and full frame (7D and 5DII currently). I have some personal preferences such as the 28mm and 50mm are more useful to me on croppers, and the 135 on FF. But these are just my own preferences, you and other folks probably have your own preferences.

In addition I have several macro lenses, a couple tilt-shift, several longer telephoto primes, along with a few zooms for those times when they're necessary.

There are many primes available for Canon, something to meet practically any need and budget. Just pick the focal lengths that most appeal to you, then you can narrow it down and start making some selections. Think about what you want to shoot, then about what focal lengths will best meet those needs. Ask questions with more info about what you want to shoot and the camera you intend to use the lenses on.

I prefer USM lenses for their generally quieter/faster/more accurate focusing. But in most cases I don't really need the considerably more expensive, bigger/heavier L-series.

If you shoot a lot of macro, it might be worth having a macro lens and you might substitute one of those for another non-macro prime in your line-up (such as a 60mm macro lens instead of a 50mm non-macro, or a 90mm macro instead of an 85mm non-macro. Keep in mind that macro lenses are usually slower focusing. They can even be too sharp for some types of photography (ask your Mom or mother-in-law if she wants her portrait shot with a lens that shows absolutely every little detail in her face!)

There are also some excellent third party prime lenses available for use on Canon cameras. Sigma, in particular, makes some great ones. Tamron and Tokina don't make many primes now, other than macro lenses, but those are quite good.

Finally, there simply aren't many primes available for some purposes. For example, you will find few very wide primes for crop cameras, probably will have to choose a zoom if you want an ultrawide and shoot with an APS-C camera.

that explains the listing at the bottom of replies. figured it was a measuring johnsons thing. just got a T2i, unfortunately with kit lenses, have added the 50 and a 18-135. really liking urban photography, but just getting into it, so not sure what would be a good lens to add, or if my interests will change for that matter.

not sure about much mentioned here, but for urban i would say that the 35mm 1.4 samyang would be a great add, its -600 and very sharp!

If I get this comment, then no, it's actually not. I though so at first, but it is useful for people to put your questions and comments into perspective. Also good if someone wants to ask about a particular lens and/or setup.

For instance we would immediately know you are shooting with a crop and adding to your kit lens.

Of course they/we could lie, but I don't think it happens too much.
