I have the Canon 50 1.4 but have been curious about the Sigma 30 or 50 1.4.
Which would you choose and why?

I don't own an Xsi but when I had my crop 50D one of my favourite lens for general stuff was the Sigma 30 f/1.4. Tack sharp, great colour, fast and accurate focus. Once I had it I hardly used my 50mm f/1.4 at all until I went full frame. So that would be my choice for what I like to shoot with a crop body, what you like to shoot may be completely different. I find the 50 is slightly sharper at f/1.4 than the Siggy 30 at f/1.4, but with care, both lenses deliver very nice results. The Siggy will allow more space inside, while your EF50 is lovely outdoors when you've more space and still want to keep the framing tight(ish) while having a better working distance. Regards, Simon I think OP is talking about switching, not adding to the 50 1.4. Kel

Maybe? "Whatever you do, enjoy yourself...otherwise, what's the point."

I don't have an Xsi, but use the Canon 50mm on a 5D and 7D without any issues. The Canon 50 f/1.4 has a "so-so" micro-USM AF motor. It's not put together particularly well, though the finish is easier to keep clean than the Sigma. There are 8 aperture blades in the Canon, but 9 in the Sigma. The Canon is cheaper than the Sigma, and lighter in weight. The Sigma has well-known problems with AF accuracy. The Canon has well-known issues with specular highlights. The filters needed for each are significantly different in size and therefore cost. "Whatever you do, enjoy yourself...otherwise, what's the point."

And although in principle, I agree that the Sigma 50 and Canon 50 "should" do the same job as each other, in truth, each has its angles and demons. Just thought I'd point that out.......even though the OP still hasn't come back in to comment ![]() Yes, he did,,sort of..post #6 Kel
