I have the Canon 50 1.4 but have been curious about the Sigma 30 or 50 1.4.

Which would you choose and why?

You don't say what you like to shoot, so we can only answer for what we like to shoot. I don't own an Xsi but when I had my crop 50D one of my favourite lens for general stuff was the Sigma 30 f/1.4. Tack sharp, great colour, fast and accurate focus. Once I had it I hardly used my 50mm f/1.4 at all until I went full frame. So that would be my choice for what I like to shoot with a crop body, what you like to shoot may be completely different.

oops sorry, missed your post about general, kids etc. So basically the same as me, plus landscapes. Believe it or not the 30 is a fun urban lens.

In that case, the Sigma 30 f/1.4 (which I own) will be a nice addition to the Canon 50 (which I also own!).

I find the 50 is slightly sharper at f/1.4 than the Siggy 30 at f/1.4, but with care, both lenses deliver very nice results.

The Siggy will allow more space inside, while your EF50 is lovely outdoors when you've more space and still want to keep the framing tight(ish) while having a better working distance.

Regards,
Simon

It will be one or the other, I won't keep the Canon if I get a Sigma. I will try to trade for one

I think OP is talking about switching, not adding to the 50 1.4.

30 1.4 if indoors, or stay with your 50 for outdoors/distant indoor shots, and general stuff (flowers, DoF/bokeh shots, etc.).

the 30 1.4 is a nice lens if you get a good copy. it's a good focal length indoors on the 50d.

i don't think it's super sharp at 1.4 but pretty good. the 50mm is too short for indoor use for my taste.

What do you expect a Sigma 50 to do that your Canon 50 can't?

I don't have an Xsi, but use the Canon 50mm on a 5D and 7D without any issues.

Canon 7D, 5D, 35L, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 135L, 200L, 10-22, 17-55, 70-300, 100-400L, 500D, 580EX(2).
Sigma 150 macro, 1.4X, 2X, Quantaray 2X, Kenko closeup tubes, Yongnuo YN685(3), Yongnuo YN-622C-TX. Lots of studio stuff.

I never used the 30mm, but I wish I did for indoor pics.

The Canon 50 f/1.4 has a "so-so" micro-USM AF motor. It's not put together particularly well, though the finish is easier to keep clean than the Sigma. There are 8 aperture blades in the Canon, but 9 in the Sigma. The Canon is cheaper than the Sigma, and lighter in weight. The Sigma has well-known problems with AF accuracy. The Canon has well-known issues with specular highlights. The filters needed for each are significantly different in size and therefore cost.

All 50mm lenses have their "niggles". And although in principle, I agree that the Sigma 50 and Canon 50 "should" do the same job as each other, in truth, each has its angles and demons.

Just thought I'd point that out.......even though the OP still hasn't come back in to comment
