I'm looking to buy the Promote Control, but there doesn't appear to be a CN3 cable for the 7D available anywhere, including from Promote Control, which is kind of nuts because for lack of their ability to sell me a $19 dollar cable, I've got no reason to buy their $330 dollar control.

Everywhere I look the thing is "unavaiable". Anybody know where to get one, or how long it's likely to take for them to become available?

According to the website you don't need a shutter cable and it is "Optional", so you could buy the unit now and keep looking for the cable.....

Shutter Cables

Click a compatible camera model above to see compatible shutter cable. The shutter cable is not required for general operation and is optional.

It looks like there are some advantages to using the shutter cable instead of the USB port.

"This accessory is a must have for the controller.
Gives much better control of the camera.
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend"

I suspect the cable is pretty standard and this one from FlashZebra might also work:
