I have heard people talk several times about being able to rent a lens for a short time instead of buying one. Where do you actually do this? Are there special online places where you can rent them or is that normally done through a local camera store??

I would like a wider angle lens for my landscape photos I'll be taking in Arizona and the Colorado this summer but the widest angle lens I have is my non IS 18-55mm Canon lens and I have heard that a 10-22mm would be ideal for landscape shots in the Grand Canyon and the Colorado mountains, I just can't afford that kind of lens right now but was thinking about seeing how much it would cost to rent one for the 3 week trip.

Canon 80D, Canon EF 17-40L, Canon EF-S 18-55mm/ Canon EF-S 55-250mm/ Canon EF 28-135mm/ Canon EF 50mm 1.8f

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

borrowlenses.com I have rented from them before for a weekend photoshoot before I had my dslr. Not all that bad cost wise but I checked into a lens for a 10day trip and it started to get expensive.

check your local brick and mortor store as well. I have 2 places near me that rent and fairly cheap too. One is also a borrowlenses.com hub if I do use them, I can get it sent to a store instead of my house.

Ive used calumet quite a few times, there is two Chicago land locations.

Also take a look at this thread, quite a few places in Chicago that do rentals. Prices need to be updated probably but gives you an idea. When comparing local shops and internet rentals don't forget to factor in the shipping which can be a lot sometimes, shouldn't be to bad for a 10-22 though.

I'd back borrowlenses.com (external link) as well. The prices are good, and all the service I've experienced has been great. A friend of mine had the wrong lens shipped to him at one point (non-IS when he asked for IS), and when he called, they apologized, and arranged to have a new lens over-nighted for the next day. Love that level of service (assuming you plan ahead!)

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!! And Silvrr I will def check out Calumet! I have heard of them before, think there is one near Brookfield Zoo area.. Looks like renting the lens I want will definitely be the way to go for this trip. I might even be adventurous and think about renting an "L" lens as well.

Calumet is great! I rented from them tons of times at the Santa Ana, CA store. Plus I like their weekend rates. Rent on friday afternoon and return on monday morning is one day.
