I decided to give this lens a go, after hearing and seeings its IQ I couldn't resist. I have a sigma 150-500mm and, on my t2i, it gave me good results stopped down to f8 but on my 7d it seems lacking. I know the sensors are VERY similar if not identical, but it just doesn't seem to resolve well. I use this lens at 500mm 99% of the time so i know for a fact switching to the prime will not inconvenience me. If I really need a shorter focal length while using the 400mm, I'll have my t2i with 80-200mm f2.8 L over my other shoulder. Since I upgraded to the 7d and all of its features, I owed it to myself to get the best glass. the focus on the siggy is sloth-like compared to the prime, sometimes I want to shoot myself. (I tried my cousins copy a few months ago).

Hopefully it gets here by the weekend so I can put it through its paces! I'm stoked, just in time for the birds to migrate through here. I also found a pair of eagles yesterday, no close photos yet though.

Anyway that was a little rant, i'm excited!!! :D

Seen a lot of posts about 100 400 and 400

Many missed the flexibility of the zoom, Hope the 400 is everything you want and need. Enjoy.

I love my 400 and do not miss a zoom. In fact my 70-200 F4 IS is not even used at all anymore. Thinking of selling it. With your Sigma on the 7D you may try using MFA at 500mm to get the focus a little sharper maybe.

It badly needs an IS update though. A reasonably priced 400 5.6 L IS would sell like hotcakes.

Been eyeballing the 400mm F5.6 though was curious if I would be getting a little redundant since I can get 400mm F5.6 with my 70-200mm F2.8 + 2x converter. Will be shooting some races and be curious if the prime would be faster and sharper. Anyone have any experience with the two?

That is exactly why they wont do it. It would take away possible sales from those that would end up taking out a 2nd mortgage to get a 400 F4 DO IS or even more pricey the 2.8. WHo knows though if around 50,000 people write to them asking for it maybe they will do it.lol The problem then comes with the fact that a 400 5.6 IS would likely cost 3-4k given how canon prices their IS lenses

I was the opposite. I had the 400mm 5.6 and greatly missed a zoom

You're almost surely right, but the 300 f4L IS is pretty reasonable. I doubt they'll do anything to deter potential buyers of the 200-400 for a year or two in any event.

It's going to BE a year or two before we see the 200-400 at the rate Canon's going right now :p
