Hi all
I have a tamron 90mm macro lens and i love to take pics of the corals in my marine tank. It is really hard to do as you can't get very close due to there being a big piece of glass between you and the corals. lighting is also another issue as during the day and evening you have different types of lighting but i am totally fascinated with the beauty of the corals.I have been trying for many months to improve my pics and here are a few for you to give me some feedback
Thanks Sharon

Honestly, I dig these. Just wish they were larger. Beautiful shot imo.

The biggest problem i seem to face when photographing corals is Focusing. The above pics are what i call my better ones. Perhaps this one will explain what i mean about focusing. Do you have any tips or is this the sharpest i'm going to get with this lens
Thanks Sharon

Your third shot is the best.

Under flourescent lights, you might be able to adjust the White Balance on the first two shots, it adds to the effect on your third.

You're now going to tell me you took these on a living reef, aren't you?

The two Acan coral shots look amazing (I especially like the green/white one). The pic of the candy cane coral feeding is a tad out of focus though (as you know). To remedy this you can do a few things, 1) turn off any flow in the tank 2) clean the tank glass very well 3) put your lens right on the glass and hold very still while shooting. If the coral is so close to the glass that you have to move the camera back to get it to focus, use a tripod with the camera parallel with the tank glass (any angles may distort the shot) and make sure the room is totally dark so your shots won't have reflections in it.

Coral is very easy to shoot in my opinion, fish are what challenge me. I hate using flash (it completely drowns out the color of the fish/coral) and most fish tend to move very fast. Most of my best fish shots came from total luck. At least with most coral they stay still so you can prepare the shot and adjust while it just sits there looking amazing. However rarely flash can accentuate some fish with wonderful results (as shown in this juvenile batfish)

Good luck

Thanks sculp
i always turn off the pumps, clean the glass and use a tripod. I will just have to keep shooting away until i get it right (maybe another year)

Well these are lovely Sharon, the sharpness and colour is great.

The only issue you have is the one we all struggle with and that is depth of field to get more of the subject in focus but I think you shots are lovely as they are anyway.
