Scott kelbys 4 book series (the title flees my mind right now) is great for some all around great info and practical application tips.

I've read 2 or 3 of Kelby's photograpy books (I think they are simply called The Digital Photography Books). I found them hard to read because his really bad sense of humor distracts you from the good photography stuff. IMHO, he could have condensed all 4 of his books into one volume of about 150 pages if he just cut out the lame humor.

If you are just starting out and grappel with getting a good exposure, as mentioned Understanding Exposure is an excellent read. Whether starting out or not, Visual Poetry by Chris Orwig is worth it.

you know i don't really find the humor so bad, at some spots it definitely drags, but i like that each book as a little deeper look into the topics and arent 4 books full of the exact same info.

but i do agree that it could be somewhat condensed and one volume could be more beneficial, but that wouldn't sell as many books ...
