I shoot in a lot of low light situations, raw, high iso, and get noise from time to time. I am think about getting some new software if I get lightroom4 do I also need a specific program for noise too like noise ninja?

I'd say that LR is plenty good for the vast majority of most photography. There are cases, though, when a "special" approach to noise reduction and sharpening can do nicely.

Try the free trials of Lightroom and the various apps out there and decide what works for you and the photography you do!

Lightroom is very good at handling noise... But the best I've found beyond that is Nik DFine. I used to use noise Ninja but have since switched.

I have Noise Ninja but have rarely used it since LR3 came out. On the other hand, I don't really push the ISO on my camera all that often. I think the better way to get an answer is to see what results you get with LR with your own images. That's the acid test.

I have Imagenomic's Noiseware and I've only used it a handful of times since getting LR3. LR3 is really effective for the majority of my high ISO files. The Noiseware plugin for CS4 takes the lead when I want to selectively remove noise using layers. So if you're not going to get that crazy with it then LR4 should be enough.

I have Noise Ninja and or Neat Image. Used to use it before LR was the main thing. I never tried LR2, so I had LR 3 when it came out. The noise reduction in LR 3 was more than enough that I don't even think I have my noise applications installed. Sure, they work, but the noise profiles are never perfect and you end up doing a lot of tweaking with a lot of settings. With LR3/4 it's easier than that - noise reduction amount on luminance and color. Done. Then you can clean it up with some sharpening. I honestly have not used any noise applications since going to LR3.

One thing I would like to see is brushable noise reduction. Just like brushable white balance and such, I think it'd be handy to be able to brush in the noise reduction and use varying noise reduction amounts in different areas.

You can do that in LR4 with the adjustment brush.

I use noiseware a lot (even if the company seems to have gone quiet of late).
Lightrooms NR is ok for most tasks but it lacks a "masking" slider which sharpening has. This means your only choice is blanket NR over the entire image.
Also the proper plugin programmes are far better optimised and offer more ability to customise to selectively target noise. Add that to layers and layer masks in PS and they still have a use.

I don't see noise reduction in there with adjustment brush

New feature in LR4 -- a slider simply labeled "Noise" with the adjustment brush. It's definitely there.

A little discussion of it around the 12:30 mark in this video:

Perhaps it is because I only have a JPEG to open

My catalogs only have "finished" products right now which are JPEGs here at work. Will check a raw tonight.

I have NIK's Dfine and Topaz DeNoise and 95% of the time I use ACR6 or Canons DPP. Much more ACR these days. Once I learned how to do it manually I prefer it. Besides when you do NR using ACR it takes seconds to sync the rest of the images. LR is the same. I just did some tests for local camera website the other day.
