Why no Wifi in cameras?

Almost every device in my home now has wifi. Sony PSP, laptop, Ipad, Iphone, Andriod phone, Nokia semi-smartphone, PS3, Xbox360.. Even my cheapo digital photoframe from Kodak has wifi!

So why cant the new DSLRs have built in wifi? It would then allow:

1. Wireless control from computer or tablet or phone.
2. Wireless file transfer.
3. Possibility of flash control (if flash were also wi-fi enabled).
4. Using SLR as web-cam for live feed.
5. And probably alot more that I can't think of right now.

Wifi modules are very cheap, so cost shouldn't be a factor for a $3000 camera.

I know there are grips that gives you wifi, but those are ridiculously expensive (costs more than an entry level DSLR), and besides, not everyone likes to use big bulky grips. I sure don't.

My guess: they have the technology, they're just slowly rolling it out...to give you a reason to buy the 7D Mark 3, the 5D Mark 5 and the Rebel XWi.

One thing for me would be security. I don't want some kid at a tournament/game hack into my camera and change my settings or worst, delete all my files.

Are you worried about that same kid hacking into your home network? Your phone when you're at McDonald's? I don't think that's a concern most would share...

And there you have it. If they put wifi in your camera, they will not be able to rip you off with the overpriced wifi grips.

A good example of how greed always comes first.

Not sure I'd want that kind of RF near my memory cards.

Probably a non factor but...

Canon isn't some grassroots kickstarter shipping-out-of-the-garage type deal.

They're a decades-old, multi-billion dollar, multinational corporation with 200,000 employees, in the business of making money off imaging products.

If they can make more money on one aspect/accessory, chances are, they'll milk it.

Eye-Fi doesn't seem concerned.

I'm glad DSLR's as a whole don't have Wi-Fi.

It would be possible to install a toilet in a car but what's the point when it's not that much harder to pull over to the side of a road & take a crap behind a bush?

Those who really, really want WiFi access to their cameras can spend the US $80 on an EyeFi card. (external link) It helps if they're also ready to spend the time and effort (which can be a very long and difficult process that can mean buying a wireless router) to figure out EyeFi's odd way of thinking.

Currently, EyeFi transfers are much, much slower, difficult and reliable than direct transfers over a USB cable.

Is it possible with one of those eyefi cards to send the images as theyre taken and display them on a screen? I am looking for a non tethered solution to show people their images while theyre taken in the studio.
