I just ordered this lens - used obviously.... and it arrived in pretty good shape. I will be shooting with it this weekend, so I'll get to see how it actually performs.

My question is regarding the lens hood. Mine did not come with one, and I would prefer to shoot with one, if possible.

Can anyone help me here- was there a custom hood for that lens? Does anyone know the Canon part number? (I am aware that Canon no longer services that lens....) Are there any third party sources for such a thing?

A quick search on the internet did not provide any answers. The search results get filled with info on the newer versions, rather than my antique...

Thanks in advance!

You can try calling the people at www.midwestcamera.com (external link). They specialize in these retired lenses and maybe have one sitting around. Other than that I would just watch ebay like a hawk, everything ends up on eBay sooner or later.

It really is going to be your best bet. Did they at least get you the proper part number for the hood? With that you can set up a custom search on ebay, and check it every so often. The ebay app will even notify you if a new item shows up under a search. I managed to buy a spare hood off of ebay for my 500 4.5 to replace one of the tabs which hold the hood onto the lens (which was missing when I bought it). It took some patience but I found one.

They did not- they said something about it not being listed in the repair manual and only being available in a camera store as an accessory item. If anyone has that part number, I would appreciate it!

The part number is listed on the hood itself. Anyone else with a non-IS 300 2.8 should be able to tell you.

*edit* according to this link (http://reviews.ebay.com …0QQugidZ10000000003158880 (external link)) it is an ET-118.

Here is one that sold on FM for reference: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1045802 (external link)

Also, here is the service manual (external link) for your lens to reference all parts including hood.

Also, according to this, the hood for the IS version will fit the non-IS, it is of course very expensive though: http://www.prophotohome.com …t-118-2-lens-hood-uk.html (external link)

I'm humbled- I was not able to find any of that info on my own. Thanks so much!

Somewhere in those links I was turned on to the Aquatech hood. For $150, I think I will give that a try.

I bought a used 300 2.8 non is from Adorama but it didn't come with a hood either. I got frustrated trying to find one and just returned it to Adorama a few days later. Good luck finding one.

That hood is going to be tough to find. You can of course get an aftermarket one. I had a friend fashion several from fiberglass and carbon fiber in colors. He used a hunk of PVC for a mold.

If you find one in good shape (or even new) you looking at 400-600 bux USD.

Geez, I really did get lucky on the extra hood I bought for parts. Granted the previous owner cut it down (Claiming cutting 3 inches off the hood made a two foot long lens easier to use?!?!?!) and repainted it, but I only wanted it for the tabs. I definitely would not have paid $300 just for the tab I needed . I paid $1.25 (plus $15 shipping). I had planned on needing to pay more than that of course, but when the auction ended no one else bid it up, and there was no reserve. http://www.ebay.com …_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 (external link).
