We have had a relatively snowless winter here in Duluth this year - which is definitely odd. But, last week we were hit with blizzard conditions strong enough to shut down my employer - a large national bank (hint: stagecoach). And not, just the local branches - even my department which does work for the entire country shut down early.

It was difficult to get decent shots of the storm as it happened because of the blowing snow, but I managed to grab this shot down in Canal Park. It was 28 degrees (balmy for us Northerners) but the wind coming off the lake was so strong my hands were PAINFULLY frozen within minutes. And, the waves were throwing ice chunks 20 feet beyond where I was standing...talk about hazardous for camera equipment.

Anyway, here is the one shot I managed to get during a 30 minute lull in the storm. As always, comments and critique are welcome and encouraged.

Great story and even better picture. KUDOS.

Have plenty of Canons, enough ammo, enough to blow 'em to "L". Now, I just have to learn to aim.

I'll second Al's post. Great story; it adds a lot to a photo that puts the viewer in the midst of that awesome tumult!

Great shot, probably the roughest water conditions I've seen depicted there. Every time the wind blows like that I try to view the Canal Park web cam and it's always plastered over with rain/snow/ice such that I can't see a thing. Thanks for posting this.

Well, the waves were still coming in hard but the blowing snow and spray calmed down enough to where visibility increased and front elements wouldnt be covered in spray. Chunks of ice the size of golf balls were still being thrown 30 feet or more - and they hurt!

Ive noticed that too - sure is quite the experience to be down there. Id like to get to Stoney Point once when the weather is like this - I bet the waves hit the road.

Thanks for the comments everyone else!
