I've got a two light bowens set up at the moment which is triggered by a 3rd party remote.

I also have a 430ex II speedlite (and a sony 360AP)

What i'm wanting is to have the two lights at the front and the speedlite behind the subject either lighting the background or providing a highlight to subjects outline/hairline

what settings would i require to trigger the speedlite the moment the studio strobe went off? or would i need to get it wired? if so what wire would i require?

I'm using a 600D btw.

I hope this makes sense as to what i'm trying to achieve.

If you don't have additional triggers, you need the speedlight in the back to act as a slave and fire when the front mains fire. However, I do not believe that 430EXII has an optical slave mode. You'll need a trigger or a flash like 580EXII that can control the 430EXII

Do yourself a favor and get a wireless receiver for each of your lights. Pay a few dollars up front for less headaches in the operation of things.

Shankar is correct, there is no optical slave on the 430exII. Do your strobes have an optical slave and youre able to trigger the 430 and have it trigger the strobes?

+1000..

He told me to stop buying cheap flashes and go get some "real" flashes like YN560s at least and some triggers.. I did not listen first.. After wasting some $$$ and failing to get what I wanted.. I listened to this..

You could get a YN560. That has a very good optical sensor, but a trigger is still preferable.

the strobes can be set off from the flash but again i dont want the flash mounted to trigger it off i'd rather do it wirelessly.

i did look into the wireless receivers and i just thought i might be missing a setting on the 430 i did have a feeling that it wasnt possible - so i was looking for some confirmation from the board regards to that!

i was hoping to use it for a family shoot on sat i guess it'll have to wait!

Another workaround would be to get an optical slave unit to attach to the 430ex. www.flashzebra.com (external link) carries them. Get the one thats specificed for canon as the canon flashes dont play well with traditional optical slaves for some reason.
