I also posted this on the other camera forum and my apologies if anyone is offended. My wife is looking to buy a higher end camera with a budget of around $1,200.00

What brand and model would you reccomend and where would you go to get it at the best price?

Any advice would be appreciated.

well seeing as this is the Canon forum everyone is going to reccomend canon, which is in my opinion the best. I would reccomend a rebel XT for your price range. you could get a XT kit and needed accesories (big mem card, case, mabye another lens) for $1200

I'd get the...
Canon Rebel XT with EF-S 18-55 kit lens
Canon 430EX flash
1 gig Sandisk Ultra II compact flash card
compact flash card reader.

I think that would be a good start.

I got stuff for taking pictures. :o When things are unclear - It's time to refocus.

Given the budget, that's about perfect.

You all realize that the XT w/acc is also going to require PP equipment. A minimum of PSE3 (or 4) and a computer. BTW I agree with y'all.

For best price with assurance of not getting screwed I'll recommend http://www.bhphotovideo.com (external link) :)

If you're going higher end, give the kit lens a miss. It's OK in some circumstances but, IMO, it doesn't do full justice to the bodies which are now available.

Gramps has a point. Both cameras are coming down in price lately. You can get the 20D for $1,200 with the 18-55 kit lens on amazon.com right now. Since you didn't mention a flash unit, add the $100 memory card and you get a better camera going over budget by $100.

On the other hand, for $1,300 you could get the Digital Rebel XT with the better, EF-S 17-85mm f/4 USM IS lens (what I bought, and what I'd prefer to the 20D with the 18-55 non-IS lens).

If your budget is really firm, though, and you want something useful right from the start, the first sugestion is a good one. You're going to want a separate flash, you have to buy a memory card, and you ought to buy a case of some sort.

Don't forget triple rebates! If you buy the XT and two lenses, you can save $225 off the price of the XT and get triple rebates off select lenses as well.

a good point and shoot, but still a point a shoot. has the same problems of other point and shoots (lack of expandability, shutter lag, ect). in some ways its more convienient than a DSLR but in terms of performance a XT is much better

Canon EOS 300D/350D + EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM + Speedlite 420EX + 2x512MB CF. You may skimp on the body but not on the lens. You will also regret not buying a flash unit.
