Canon 5DIII DOES have favorable Photographic Dynamic Range? Link to analysis

Sorry if this has been posted already, but this guy has analyzed sensor data from alot of cameras. I found his site from a link on that other forum

He's primarily a Nikon shooter, but he's analyzed data from the preliminary Canon 5DIIII raw files and he thinks they compare favorably. Link to original thread here, so you may draw your own conclusions:

They're really busy taking a dump on a whole bunch of other threads bickering and hammering away at their points. If your thread gains traction they'll drop by in due course, I'm sorry to say.

I am switching to Nikon, partly due to DR concerns, but I sincerely hope this is true; that Canon has taken serious and significant strides improving the dynamic range of their sensors. Of particular interest to me is how well the sensor resolves the dark end of the spectrum. So far, most of the focus has been on the 5D III's excellent noise-handling at high ISO scenarios, but I'd be very pleased with noise-free ISO 100 images!

At this point, I'm not sure what those guys are trying to prove which is why I bowed out of those threads for now. They've said everything at least 10 times over, we get it the 5DII and Canon sensors in general just plain suck compared to the competition.

Nothing wrong with switching if a Canon body can't do what you need it to do. I can't ever argue with that but at least you're doing something about it and speaking with your wallet instead of **** to anyone who'll listen. Good luck, I still haven't decided if I'll switch or not but if I do, I promise I won't be screaming how bad Canon sucks on my way out the door..lol!!

Just to clarify, the two cameras are comparable, but only at ISO800 and above.

Keep in mind, I'm not trying to pee on your party, just explaining the differences that the gentleman you cited has found between the two cameras.

No worries, right now I'm leaning towards the 1DX so I don't have a dog in this race just yet.

There's just so much negativity around the 5D's sensor, I thought an objective viewpoint from someone who seems to know quite a bit about sensor metrics might be interesting reading. The numbers are what the numbers are good, bad or average

More than anything I was hoping for an improvement in DR - if the chart above is correct, then we are NOT getting it with the 5D3. I don't need more MPs or even better AF (I shoot landscapes mostly with my 5Ds).

I kinda feel the same way. Yes, if the chart is correct, Cannon almost completely ignored the DR improvements on the 5D3.. Just like a big fat slap in the face to all landscape and travel photographers. (that last part was perhaps a little bit overexagerated, but still..)

Now, if I could just figure out a quick way to finance a switch to the dark side.

Hello high MP monster with better DR than it's "low mp" competitor.

I think Canon kinda has their hands tied right now. Without spending a lot of cash in reinventing the wheel, I believe their current CMOS designs may be at their limits. Perhaps they might bring some new minds into their R&D in the future or invest in some architectural improvements from some outside consultants.
