I produced the following as an animated pre title/advert for an event we will be filming in the summer.

The majority was prepared in 3DS Max with some tweaking (smoke and lights) in HitFilm Ultimate all finally lashed together in Sony Vegas.

Cheers guys, I appreciate your comments. Animation is a weird thing as pretty much anything is possible but to try to keep it within the confines of what it believable is often a challenge. Also, after spending 18 hrs rendering out a 4 second sequence to decide it is rubbish is pretty frustrating.

Most of the time the challenge is trying to convey to Clients what can be done, and to get them on board where they are willing to invest in the vision of what could be possible, without first seeing it.

I love animation because it is only limited by your imagination and any vision can be achieved though time and/or resources. In some respects it is easier than real life video because you have complete control of all the elements On the other it is a constant battle between what can be done and how much time you should throw at a clip. 2 seconds of video takes 2 seconds (+ however long it takes to set up). 2 seconds of animation could take 2 weeks subject to the detail and how much can be used in other shots.

Well done John! That looks like a lot of work. And the mix of animation with your video as a background was really nicely done as well. I loved the last part about people rushing to be there. An excellent use of a bit of video that probably wouldn't be useful otherwise. Brilliant!

Cheers Michael. Much of it is no different to "real" video, it's just a different mechanism to convey your vision. In many respects it is easier as you have total control of all aspects of the image. Equally it can be more frustrating when you know what you want to see but just can't get it to work.

That is really cool! I wish i could animate...

i noticed one little thing and im not sure if you wanted this or if its accidently:
starting at 0:44 the military vehical at the front is pretty transparent, you can see the background video through it... as i said im not sure if you want it to do that

Are you looking at the original or the later link? In the original I, in effect, ran the video in the back ground. The video then becomes the environment and has a nasty habit of being reflected in any shiney objects - it is also apparent in the brass plate of the Live Arena towards the back of the table. In the second link I composited the two elements which avoided this and also sped up rendering time.
