I just saw this on the canon rumor site.

I haven’t heard anything more about the 4K DSLR Canon said they were developing. There is speculation that it will appear before NAB 2012 in April. Nothing can be confirmed on that front.

What does 4k mean? What are the benefits? Thanks.

That is the rumor for the Cine line (cinema) where Canon will produce DSLR cameras geared towards video. 4K means that it has a ~4000 pixel resolution on the wide side (correct me if I'm wrong), so it's like the next step above 1080p. (1080 meaning that it has 1080 pixels on the wide side). The camera most likely will not be used for still photos.

It would be a camera body that can do true "Digital Cinema" as opposed to just 1080p HD video...

It would compete with RED and with Arriflex.

Basically, it's "video" at full dSLR resolution which gives you all the benefits of an SLR like a large sensor, shallow depth of field, a wide variety of lens choices, etc...

If the C300 is any indicator, it won't come cheap and neither will any glass engineered specifically for use on a new 4K system.

THanks. That makes sense now. It's funny how I work in the movie industry and never heard of that before. I'm on set next to camera every day, too. As of right now, the Alexa from Arri is hands down THE camera in the biz. but on a side note, I work on NCIS LA from time to time and they use the Alexa, 7D, 5D2, and C300 with EF and PL mounts. That show uses them all...

You're half right. The problem is that cine resolutions measure on the wide side but video resolutions measure on the tall side. So 4K is actually 4096x____ (the height determines the aspect ratio), whereas HD is actually _____x1080. So to compare fairly, you would say it's 4096 vs. 1920. Still a huge difference, however. :)
