Fed my microbes some activated dry yeast this week and it put lead in their pencil for several days.

Thanks Linda. #3 is two Heliozoa that have come together to swap food, not DNA as I thought. I have other shots of up to 4 or maybe 5 individuals that have melded together to share an abundance of food, in the form of yeast that I added to the water they are in. They love it. What is most amazing is, they can do this, then divide again into the same number of individuals as originally melded together. I find that fascinating.

Thanks Ryan. I really wish I had a more powerful lens to see these bacteria with. They are quite a bit smaller than almost anything else I find to shoot, but very interesting to study.

Nice captures there. Are these phase-contrast? What equipment are you using?

Yes, all images are phase contrast with a Nikon Fluophot scope, using a 40x phase contrast lens. A new acquisition that I am very happy with. ;)

They are all harmless. Even beneficial, as all but the bacteria will eat the harmful kind and turn them back into their component particles, which are not harmful to anything.

Bacterial chains are very common and interesting, but small. I wish I had a more powerful lens to see them with. :)
