I have a well loved 17-40L, and the focus/zoom black rubber rings are discolored, they've seen better days. Are these replaceable? Where can I get new ones?

I'm pretty sure you can get them from Canon. Call your nearest service center and ask about spare parts availability. I've seen discussions on this forum about OTHER replacement parts, and I'd bet you can get 'em.

Maybe if you google "Canon Replacement parts" you'll come up with some answers.

Regards!
Don

Part numbers YB2-0381-000 (RING, ZOOM RUBBER) and YB2-0382-000 (RING, FOCUS RUBBER) are the bits you're after. You can either call Canon & ask for the part numbers, or else try & source from other suppliers

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Or, just clean the rubber ring....

Mild soap (such as a little dish soap or, even better, car washing soap) and water will usually do. Use an old toothbrush. Be careful to not get the lens too wet, wrap it with a cloth rag to capture any drips.

Then for a finishing touch, get "tire and rubber dressing" solution from the local auto parts store. I'd suggest not using the self-cleaning products or the glossy ones like Armor All. Those make it too slipper or sticky.

This two step process will usually make rubber look like new, unless it's been badly stained or faded, or is just too far dried out and gone and needs replacement.

I like to use Mothers "Preserves". Once dry, it leaves a matte finish that's not sticky or slippery. Smells good, too!

Nice one Alan, I'll admit I never considered using a tire product on my lens.

There is one called "Back to Black" that is impressive. You might also try slipping the old rings off, just so you don't damage the lens.

I took an old toothbrush, some dish soap and water to them, and they look brand new.I did take the zoom ring off because it was so close to the end, but I didn't want to stretch the focus ring over everything. It worked just fine though. Thanks everyone.
