I'm looking at buying a TC-80N3 Timer remote control for my 7D, but I'm just curios if the knock offs are worth picking up? The Canon timer is $120+, but knock off runs as little as twenty bucks. Is the Canon release worth the extra $100? Anyone got a knock off timer and was happy with it?

I have had the Canon for many years and have always been very happy with it. Never had a knock off.

I have a yongnuo one for my 450D, works perfectly. Battery cover is slightly more flexible than the canon one I imagine, but that is a nonessential part, and I honestly don't care if the build quality is not as good, because I can buy 5 of them for the price of 1 canon.

I have the Neewer/Shoot version from Amazon. The instructions can be hard to decipher but it works nonetheless.

I prefer the term "third-party" instead of "knock off." And although I have a Canon timer I have several products from Phottix and I recommend them highly; the products I have are made to OEM standard: http://www.phottixstore.com/store/wired-remotes.html (external link)

I just ordered one of the Yongnuo ones. Hopefully it works fine! $20 is so much better than $140.

For the price, the ebay units work fine. LCDs can be hard to read when it's really cold, but hell, it's really cold!

Yeah, when it's -40 here I don't exactly expect LCD screens to function they way they're supposed to!

My $20.00 unit seems to be working just fine. At $259.95 Canadian for the Canon version
I can buy quite a few of them. Mine is coming up on 2 years old, and so far still looks and
works like new.

Save your money and buy a cheaper one. I've used several, and they all work about the same. Personally, I use a Bowen model, I got for $28 at Fry's.

Yeah, that's a lot of extra cash that could go towards some good glass.
