We have yet to see how the 22 Mp sensor will compare with the D800 and it may not be an issue. But, I would have liked to have seen a higher resolution sensor!

More dynamic range.

Other than that, pretty much nothing.

I would like to have seen some real innovation, something that pushed the technological envelope. Maybe the worlds first high quality EVF with a bag full of capabilities that the current crop of DSLRs just don't have. Maybe the worlds first super fast contrast based AF, rendering the need for phase detect AF useless thus simplifying the camera making it less expensive. Or maybe a new sensor technology that is a quantum jump in performance, not a 1/2 stop or so based on better software algorithms.

The MkIII is a nice body but hardly one that would give you that WOW effect that the original 5D had. It's more like the MkIII fixed the shortcomings of the MkII. I'll still probably get one but there is nothing that give you that "I gotta have one" feeling.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

This reminds me of Apple. Everyone keeps coming up with magical flying car equivalent items in their minds, as to what the next model should be. Then, when the next device comes out with double the horsepower, 4x the screen quality, major updates to all of the existing features, etc... everyone is disappointed and calls it a "dud" of an update.

I think that's a lot of what is happening here actually. I mean, the fact that this thing has a far superior AF system than even the 1DIV (often regarded as the best Canon ever made) when a few months ago, everyone claimed the 5D2 would be "perfect" if it only had the 7D AF system. Now it has an even better, 1D system AF in it, twice as fast FPS as it's competitor, etc... and yet, people are starting to once again call this a failure.

(JJ, I'm not insulating that you are calling it a dud, I'm just using your post as a reference here, hope you don't mind.)

I don't mind, but I don't consider the body a dud either. My comment has more to do with Canon having lost it's edge. Canon wowed the market with a inexpensive SLR, the Rebel, CMOS sensors with market leading high ISO capabilities, and the first FF SLR, the 5D, and the first camera with HD video. They seem to have gone to sleep after that.

Nah, I understand, but as technology matures, major breakthroughs just don't happen as much anymore. Many say that the DSLR is about as mature technology as it gets. Barring the next breakthrough (EVIL or something else), the current state of imaging tech, just can't produce much WOW factors... it's about refining the product now.

I kind of agree with this. Whether it's cameras or internal combustion engines, progress never stops, but the major breakthroughs become much less frequent.

Good comparison, but I would note that even though the inner workings of an internal combustion engine haven't changed much, the external systems have which has resulted in amazing changes in performance, reliability, and a stability. I think that even if DSLR sensor technology doesn't progress in a linear fashion, the external systems that connect our cameras to us and the world will bring amazing changes in the future.

seeing that there are so many AF points, i wish they were spread out across the entire frame instead of clustered in the middle. That would mean we would never have out of focus shots when recomposing an image taken at large apertures because recomposing would be a thing of the past. Composing and recomposing wastes time.
Or if the above is a stupid idea then i would like to see the implimentation of the hasselblads ''true focus'' system where the focus is automatically readjusted when recomposing.
i would also like to see a version of the camera without any AA filter.
As you can see from the above statements, my priority is sharpness. But ya i probably couldnt afford the 5Diii and an L prime lens so this is all just babbling :).

One could easily argue that is what Canon did, with improved AF, jpg noise reduction, 6fps, in camera HDR, etc.
