I know I am not posting images in this thread but the question relates to posted images here in this forum.

I'm wondering if anyone else sees what I do. I host my images on SmugMug. When I look at them on the SmugMug site, they look critically sharp but often when I post them to a forum, they don't appear as sharp when displayed. Is anyone else seeing anything like this or is it just an old man's imagination?

Although I dont use SmugMug, I use Photobucket there is something that happens to the images when using these types of sites every once in awhile a shot dosent look correct. I dont use High Res images anyway for the web

A little L goes a long way.

I'm probably not much help Harv but when I post on Flickr and then link here I see absolutely no difference. Can't say the same for Facebook though.

Harv I agree with you 100% I don't know why, but your right they are not as sharp when you link from smugmug. I'd like to find out why. Now it might be 2 old men's imagination. :)

Harv, you took the words right out of my mouth.
I felt exactly the same way when I posted a few from
my Zenfolio account.
I wasnt goin to say anything fearing the long-timers on the site
but Im glad to hear I wasn't the only one thinking this.I honestly am a bit
confused on how to oversharpen to make them look correct now?

I have seen the same things with my photos sometimes. Not sure what is going on.Maybe a bandwidth issue that compresses sometimes? Who knows.

Thanks a lot, guys. I don't know why it happens but am glad to hear that I may not be losing my mind. There is so little of it left, I couldn't afford it. :)

I don't know about a comparison, Harvey, but I don't think I've ever thought any of your posts appeared soft on here, when I've seen them.

I use Photobucket Harvey and most of the time my photos come through on this site fine... sometimes, as you say, not as sharp... But... at times when I upload to Photobucket, the photos from my Mac are beautifully detailed and then don't look so hot on Photobucket. I delete or don't post them.... and I don't know why these storage sites have that problem

.... and also from this old man... it's nice to know that you are still "vertical"... I was worried about you.... ;)

Comparison. This one is hosted on my website server.

This one is linked from Smugmug.

Seems like not only is it less sharp but the colors are somewhat muted. This is the exact same image uploaded to both sites.

Interesting comparison; thank, Craig. Yes, the self-hosted image looks to have better color and contrast to me than the SmugMug linked image does; although, actual clarity or sharpness appears the same...that's interesting.

Question for you all having this issue....

Are you uploading a full sized image then linking a smaller sized image from your sites? Not sure if this may be the problem.

I use Zenfolio and when I edit an image I edit 2...one full sized print and a smaller version sized for forums..usually 800-900 on the longest side. I see no difference in what I host on my Zenfolio site vs. what I share here.

Duane, when I link to my image on SmugMug, I link to the uploaded original size, not a downsized version.

I use the original Duane but it may be just that you like more sharpening than I do.
Your photos always look sharp on my Mac.
I'll post some more when I get home and see how they look.

THat comparison is very telling for sure. I need to pay more attention to mine for sure. From that comparison you showed it is smugmug that is the culprit not POTN like I thought.
