At the risk of sounding like a cranky old man, coming from a film background we couldnt go above 400 without beginning to make some serious compromises with the quality of our images. You could push process some black and white film up to 1600 but it came with grain and that severely limited what you could do with the prints. High ISO is great but I think newer users fail to appreciate how far and how fast we have come to be where we are.

You sound fine. I have massive respect for film and I do appreciate where we are today. Unfortunately, I have never done any developing myself. I do have a Nikon N8008, that I haven't used much though.

Nice shot.

Trust me, there really isnt any reason to try your hand at film. The cranky oldster in me would occasionally like to handcuff some of the more arrogant newbies to a pentax k-100 and roll of tri-x just so they appreciate where we've come from. But the cost of the film, processing, and the limitations on display make it an exercise in history more than anything else. As someone who has processed thousands of rolls of film over the years just enjoy the benefits of digital and keep pumping out the good work.

As a student back in the 80's I took an interest in B&W photography, developed my own films, had an expensive Durst enlarger (you can find them for free now on eBay!) but absolutely hated the long and laborious processing. So much so that after a few years I packed it in.
I love the digital cameras and am still in awe of the 5Dc's ISO1600. I am always amazed when I see young people who have never shot with film complain about noise at ISO12.800 or some such ridiculously high number...

Understood. It's just that your post was a bit ambiguous on this so I though I would mention it. :)

your right, it wasn't very clear what I meant :)

^^ moot points regarding ISO, IMO.

the camera is old. it has strengths and weaknesses.

I realize the camera is old. The fact that time marches on and the only technological updates I'd wish to make, in a fairytale world, is higher ISO values says A LOT about its beautiful IQ and everything else about it that hasn't been made obsolete by technology.

High ISO is great but I think newer users fail to appreciate how far and how fast we have come to be where we are.

Growing up in this tech heavy generation I understand all too well that technology evolves at an increasingly rapid pace these days. Its just part of my dream of the perfect camera body that updates itself with the times. A man can dream can't he? lol. I absolutely love this body. Hell I was bummed that it didn't have auto ISO when I first got it but it has quickly become 2nd nature to manage ISO myself. So much so that auto-ISO isnt even a drawing feature of newer bodies to me anymore. I love that about this body, it forces me to learn.
