Does anyone use exposure compensation on their 5D to slightly over expose the image? I seem to find my 5D likes to slightly under expose.

Yes! But each situation could call for something different, depending on the scene.

I expose to the right (HAMSTTR), I certainly don't use it to slightly over expose, just to get the histogram as far to the right as possible.

In my experience Canon cameras default to expose to the left! Which is a shame and slightly foolish.

That depends on what you go by. I'm in Manual mode always and don't think in terms of under- or overexposure. I simply look at the histogram and dial in my settings to get the exposure that I want. And like Snowyman I like my exposure to be to the right. The fact that the meter in your camera says: *this here is the Mark for the Right Exposure*, doesn't make it so. Just use it as a starting point and go from there.

Bad choice of words on my part, I meant to "overexpose" compared to what the camera wants to do. I push the histogram to the right vs. left which seems to be what the camera does. I shoot manual most of the time but often use AV as well. So it sounds like my 5D is acting no different than what others experience in this regard.

Metering was center weighted avg....noise reduction in post (LR4). But, not as much as you would think...

Exposure was key...With my street shooting at night...I do intentionally ETTR. But, in this case, there was great light coming from the window

Awesome. Thanks for the info!

+1, stunning love it...

Thanks! :) It's very simple double exposure effect. In photoshop just put one layer on a portrait photo and change the blending mode to "screen" and you're done!

This is a fairly common comment, but in most cases I consider it a "misconception".

First off, know that a "standard" exposure is gotten by shooting a subject with the metering needle "centered". But the result will be slightly to the left of center in the histogram, due to the fact that camera meters are "calibrated" to produce something darker than "medium".

You can check this out: go to a wall that has a plain, smooth color/tone, not pure black or pure white (because of the danger of clipping).

The camera can be in any exposure "mode" and any "meter" mode, just make sure that the "subject" fills the frame and that the meter does "center" when exposing. Any focus mode is fine as long as the "subject" is uniform in tone.

Take the shot! Then check out the histogram -- the center "spike" of the histogram should be slightly to the left (a bit darker than "middle"). This is normal and to be expected, in other words, it's not "underexposing".

Now, when you are actively shooting, you need to take control of your exposure. I don't "trust" an auto mode (or rather a semi-auto mode) unless I'm prepared to "tweak" the exposure compensation.

Imagine shooting a subject that is brighter than "medium": the camera in an auto mode will set the exposure to make the subject "darker", because that is the "standard exposure". So yeah, the resutl will be "underexposed" because that is the nature of the beast!

This is why a lot of time people are perplexed when they photograph a snowy scene and the snow comes out darker than expected -- the camera is doing what it's designed to do. This may happen less with the "Evaluative" metering mode since that mode does take in a broad range of scene tones, but still, be prepared!
